40 Year-old Tony Greyson-Newman dreams of representing Jamaica at 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Tony was the first Jamaican to compete in an international kayak event at Sella descent in Spain. Entering the history books in his short kayaking career, Tony now has his sights set on competing on the world’s stage at this year’s Rio Olympics.     On his recent trip to Jamaica, he introduced some basic sprint kayaking techniques to enthusiastic young rowers at Kingston Rowing Club, based at the Caribbean Maritime Institute. The kayaker was delighted to meet Christian Stokes, one of the first Jamaican bobsleigh team members who gave him great encouragement.   Coconut Essence UK recently became Tony’s sponsor Rio 2016 hopeful. Kam Punia Director at DOKAKI, the exclusive European distributors of JTs Coconut Essence said “Aligning ourselves with Tony is fantastic for the brand, accelerating JT’s Coconut Essence movement into water sports and increasing our ever growing popularity within the Jamaican community.     Team Jamaica made hockey history as the first Caribbean nation to become associate members of the IIHF. Sportsnet was there to cover their on-ice debut led by their Head Coach Graeme Townshend, who was the first Jamaican-born player in the NHL.   Jamaica’s goal is to field a men’s hockey team at the Winter Olympics in the next 20 years, according to the Toronto Star. Our U-20 ice hopefuls attended 2016 Jamaica Ice Hockey Evaluation Camp in Toronto, Canada earlier this month. Jamaica, known for competing in bobsled in the Winter Olympics, has a long way to go. The nation does not have an indoor ice rink, according to the newspaper.     Several current NHL players have Jamaican ties, including Montreal Canadiens star defenseman P.K. Subban, whose father moved from Jamaica to Canada at age 11. Subban represents Canada internationally.     “If we can pull this off, you’re looking at an inspiring story and the idea that anything is accomplishable if you put your mind to it,” Graeme Townshend, the head coach and first Jamaican-born player in the NHL for the Bruins, Islanders and Senators in the 1990s, told the newspaper. “If Jamaica can get a […]

Three the hard way – Thompson, Schippers and Felix face off in Brussels Diamond League Finale

by admin· September 10, 2015· in News· 0 comments
It could be fireworks in the Women’s 200m at the 2015 finale of the Diamond League series in Brussels, Belgium on September 11. The race will see three of the fastest women in history over the distance facing the starter in the much-anticipated face-off. The 2015 World Champion Dafne Schippers, the 3rd fastest woman ever over 200m with 21.63 seconds will renew battle with the the 5th fastest, Elaine Thompson (21.66) after their epic showdown at the Bird’s Nest Stadium almost two weeks ago. On that occasion, the flying Dutchwoman closed like the proverbial runaway train to nab Thompson on the line. What makes the race even more interesting will be the presence of series leader and three time World Champion over 200m, American Allyson Felix. This changes the dynamics of the race, at least on paper, as Felix is possibly in the best shape of her life. The 29 year old American who had the only sub 22 clocking before the Beijing World Championships, bypassed the 200m to concentrate on the 400m, which she won easily in Championship Record/World Leading time of 49.26 seconds. She underlined her form with a mind-boggling sub 48 leg in the 4x400m relays […]

ASAFA POWELL, SHERONE SIMPSON OUT-OF-COURT SETTLEMENT

by admin· September 08, 2015· in News· 0 comments
Kingston, JAMAICA– The world’s fourth fastest man and former world 100M record-holder Asafa Powell and Olympic and World Championship silver medalist Sherone Simpson have reached an out-of-court settlement with Dynamic Life Nutrition LLC, the company that sold the supplement Epiphany D1. Powell and Simpson sued the company earlier this year after discovering that they included ingredients in the product that were not listed on the label. The sprinters took Epiphany D1 as part of their training regimen, but later found out that the supplement contained oxilofrine, a stimulant which the company failed to let consumers know. As a result, the two Jamaican nationals were suspended from the sport for 6 months after the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) found that they did not know the stimulant was present in Epiphany D1. “There is no way to really explain the kind of damage a ban has on an athlete’s reputation. For us it was especially painful, because we really let down our countrymen. There’s no doubt that we’re going to continue fight to repair it and regain the trust of my fans and fans of the sport,” Powell said.   Powell and Simpson’s management team Powell had Epiphany D1 […]

Far from finished – Veronica Campbell-Brown silences critics

by admin· September 07, 2015· in News· 0 comments
“…I enjoy my critics because they push me. When people say Veronica needs to retire or Veronica does not have it, that motivates me to prove them wrong.” Jamaicans have a saying that ‘wha nuh dead nuh dash it weh’. Very wise words and especially so when the person in question is tried, tested and proven, a big stage performer and one of the most decorated athletes not just in the history of Jamaican track and field but also on the global scene. Veronica Campbell-Brown has been a fixture on Jamaican teams to global meets since her senior team debut at the 2000 Sydney Olympics when she earned a Silver medal as a member of the 4x100M team. Her record ranks her among the best female sprinters ever. At the National Senior ‘Trials’ in late June, VCB as Campbell-Brown is affectionately called, had somewhat of a disappointing trials even though qualifying for both the 100m and 200m to the 2015 World Championship in Beijing, China. She finished 3rd in both events at the ‘Trials’, failing to break 11 seconds in the 100M and 23 seconds in the longer sprint. Many, including persons in media expressed sentiments that she was […]

Usain Bolt ends 2015 season after pulling out of Brussels Diamond League

by admin· September 07, 2015· in News· 0 comments
After the excitement of the past few weeks at the World T&F Championships in Beijing I have decided not to race again in 2015. I am already thinking about next year and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio where I will attempt to defend my titles in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m. I will enjoy a short break from training now to recharge before resuming background training next month.   I have competed in Brussels many times over the years and it is always one of the best meets on the circuit. The track is fast and they always have a full house. I was looking forward to running there this year but I’m happy to end the season without any injuries and ready to go for 2016. I have received unbelievable support over the past few weeks and would like to thank all the fans for their good wishes.
