Sprint King Usain Bolt wins Male Athlete of the Year award by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS). This is the sprinter’s 5th AIPS award. A panel of sports journalists from 91 countries voted in this year’s poll. Bolt, having won the 100m, 200m and 4x100m at the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015, received a total of 804 votes to finish in front of tennis player Novak Djokovic and footballer Lionel Messi. It is the fifth time that Bolt has won the award, following his victories in 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013, the years in which he similarly won three gold medals at global championships. The women’s award, like in 2012 and 2013, went to US tennis player Serena Williams. Ethiopia’s world 1500m champion and record-holder Genzebe Dibaba finished second with 13.19% of the votes while world 200m champion Dafne Schippers was third with 10.31% of the votes. The IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015 was voted as the Best Press Facility of the year. The IAAF World Championships have won the AIPS Best Press Facilities award for each edition of the current millennium. (info via IAAF)

With only hours before tomorrow’s show, I sit here reflecting on how much of an adventure and journey my life has been. It could be fireworks in the Women’s 200m at the 2015 finale of the Diamond League series in Brussels, Belgium on September 11. The race will see three of the fastest women in history over the distance facing the starter in the much-anticipated face-off. The 2015 World Champion Dafne Schippers, the 3rd fastest woman ever over 200m with 21.63 seconds will renew battle with the the 5th fastest, Elaine Thompson (21.66) after their epic showdown at the Bird’s Nest Stadium almost two weeks ago. On that occasion, the flying Dutchwoman closed like the proverbial runaway train to nab Thompson on the line. What makes the race even more interesting will be the presence of series leader and three time World Champion over 200m, American Allyson Felix. This changes the dynamics of the race, at least on paper, as Felix is possibly in the best shape of her life. The 29 year old American who had the only sub 22 clocking before the Beijing World Championships, bypassed the 200m to concentrate on the 400m, which she won easily in Championship Record/World Leading time of 49.26 seconds. She underlined her form with a mind-boggling sub 48 leg in the 4x400m relays […]

Kingston, JAMAICA– The world’s fourth fastest man and former world 100M record-holder Asafa Powell and Olympic and World Championship silver medalist Sherone Simpson have reached an out-of-court settlement with Dynamic Life Nutrition LLC, the company that sold the supplement Epiphany D1. Powell and Simpson sued the company earlier this year after discovering that they included ingredients in the product that were not listed on the label. The sprinters took Epiphany D1 as part of their training regimen, but later found out that the supplement contained oxilofrine, a stimulant which the company failed to let consumers know. As a result, the two Jamaican nationals were suspended from the sport for 6 months after the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) found that they did not know the stimulant was present in Epiphany D1. “There is no way to really explain the kind of damage a ban has on an athlete’s reputation. For us it was especially painful, because we really let down our countrymen. There’s no doubt that we’re going to continue fight to repair it and regain the trust of my fans and fans of the sport,” Powell said. Powell and Simpson’s management team Powell had Epiphany D1 […]

“…I enjoy my critics because they push me. When people say Veronica needs to retire or Veronica does not have it, that motivates me to prove them wrong.” Jamaicans have a saying that ‘wha nuh dead nuh dash it weh’. Very wise words and especially so when the person in question is tried, tested and proven, a big stage performer and one of the most decorated athletes not just in the history of Jamaican track and field but also on the global scene. Veronica Campbell-Brown has been a fixture on Jamaican teams to global meets since her senior team debut at the 2000 Sydney Olympics when she earned a Silver medal as a member of the 4x100M team. Her record ranks her among the best female sprinters ever. At the National Senior ‘Trials’ in late June, VCB as Campbell-Brown is affectionately called, had somewhat of a disappointing trials even though qualifying for both the 100m and 200m to the 2015 World Championship in Beijing, China. She finished 3rd in both events at the ‘Trials’, failing to break 11 seconds in the 100M and 23 seconds in the longer sprint. Many, including persons in media expressed sentiments that she was […]

After the excitement of the past few weeks at the World T&F Championships in Beijing I have decided not to race again in 2015. I am already thinking about next year and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio where I will attempt to defend my titles in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m. I will enjoy a short break from training now to recharge before resuming background training next month. I have competed in Brussels many times over the years and it is always one of the best meets on the circuit. The track is fast and they always have a full house. I was looking forward to running there this year but I’m happy to end the season without any injuries and ready to go for 2016. I have received unbelievable support over the past few weeks and would like to thank all the fans for their good wishes.

Mention the name Novlene Williams-Mills and several adjectives come to mind…fighter, survivor, resilient, humble, determined, classy and consistent. The 33 year old has been through the wringer, on and off the track, but continues to soldier on, knowing that she is an inspiration to millions of women the world over. She is battling a thyroid infection which makes it difficult to cope from day to day. Little niggles and much younger, fitter opponents are also obstacles she must overcome. Truth is she has faced much tougher battles which would have primed her for another IAAF World Championship journey. The veteran quarter-miler was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2012 before turning up for the Jamaica trials where she won the national title over 400m on her way to qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics. Three days after the Olympics, she had a lump removed from her breast and in January 2013 had a double mastectomy. She was the national champion again in 2013 and went on to make the finals of the world championships. She had a banner year in 2014, winning the Diamond League series for her event as well as Commonwealth Games Silver medal in the individual […]

“…the 200m is my favourite event. I am coming out to win as always…..Not gonna let Gatlin beat me…that’s for sure,” said the 9-time World Championship Gold Medalist. Daggers are drawn. The world awaits Bolt vs Gatlin…the rematch. Not as hyped as their 100m showdown but the stakes are just as high. The post 100m final rhetoric from the main protagonists have whetted the appetite for much more. Perhaps this time Ato Boldon will spare himself ‘the Donkey of the Day’ tag by not giving the Gold to Gatlin before the race is run. Justin Gatlin has once again thrown down a challenge to world record holder Usain Bolt, the man who humbled him in the epic 100m finals on Day 2 of the Championships. As it was in that event, the much demonized Gatlin will go into the final with the fastest time, building on his 19.58 seconds world lead. The American who won the 200m title in 2005 at the World Championships in Helsinki, scorched the track with an impressive 19.87 seconds. He is on a mission. He may never be accepted in the good graces of track and field fans or the world governing body, the […]
