Jamaica’s Omar McLeod produced a clinical display to win the 60m Hurdles at the IAAF World Indoor Championships at the Oregon Convention Centre in Portland, Oregon. McLeod, the 21 year old former Kingston College and Manchester High School standout won his first Gold medal for Jamaica at a senior global championships with an impressive joint world leading time of 7.41 seconds (PB). Pascal Martinot-Lagarde of France (7.46) pipped his teammate Dimitri Bascou (7.48) for the Silver medal. The three-time US NCAA Division One Indoor Champion was one of the favourites going into the final after winning his semi-final heat in 7.52 despite a stumble shortly after the start. McLeod had previously made the finals of the 110m Hurdles in his first time as a senior representative at the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing China. The record-breaking class of 2016 came, saw and conquered leaving their marks on what was another magnificent staging of the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Track and Field Championships, widely recognized as the premier meet of its kind in the world. There were 12 records over the five days of intense, exciting, nail-biting, grueling and show-stopping competition. The boys were responsible for eight of the twelve records to fall with the girls accounting for the other four. One record was equaled and another broken twice in one event. There was at least one record on each of the five days and one super athlete left ‘Champs’ 2016 with an amazing three records. The honor roll of the 106th edition makes impressive reading. Calabar High’s phenom Christopher Taylor was first to enroll in the hallowed halls of the 2016 Class of Record Breakers. Top Edwin Allen High School sprinter Patrice Moody was reportedly disqualified after winning her semi-final of the Class One Girls 200m. Moody was one of the favourites to win the event especially after defeating top contenders Ashley Williams of Holmwood Technical High and defending champion Natalliah Whyte of St. Jago High in a very tough semi-final. The much improved Edwin Allen sprinter clocked a decent season leading23.56 ahead of Williams 23.72 and a resolute Whyte 23.86 after a prolonged stretch duel. She was disqualified after being deemed to have breached IAAF Rule 163.3 which speaks to ‘Lane Infringement’. Not ascertained whether the management of the Edwin Allen team had lodged an appeal. This was the second major misfortune to hit the defending champions in the past two days. The school’s Class Four sprint relay team which was highly fancied to win the gold medal missed out on the finals scheduled for Saturday after disaster struck on the 3rd exchange.
