Janieve Russell provided the only real shock of the opening day of the 2016 JAAA/ Supreme Ventures National Senior Track and Field Championships at the National Stadium. The 22 year old who established herself as the big favourite to win a second straight national title after a few eye-catching performances in the 2016 Diamond league series was a no show for the semi-final heats of the 400m hurdles. The University of Technology (UTech) student who is regarded in many circles as a bona fide medal contender for the Rio Olympics reportedly picked up a slight injury and her medical team opted to err on the side of caution by pulling her from the meet. Bruce James, Manager of the MVP Club which has its base at UTech confirmed on national television that the current world number two with a season/personal best 53.96 had requested a Medical Exemption which would make her eligible for selection should she prove fitness and form ahead of deadline for the naming of the team. The JAAA selection policy outlines how such cases are to be treated: *”Athletes who are ranked/listed in the top three in the world for their event who […]

Regional powerhouse Jamaica unleashed much of it’s heavy artillery on Day One of the 45th CARIFTA Games in St. Georges, Grenada. The Jamaican youngsters showed little or no ill effects of the recent ‘Champs’campaign, turning in one dominant performance after the other. At the end of the opening day, Jamaica had amassed some 26 medals including 11 Gold, 10 Silver and 5 Bronze. In 2015 Jamaica failed to win either Boys 100m title and it was clear from the heats that there would be no repeat of that anomaly. In the U18 division, Jhevaughn Matherson and Dejour Russell went in as favourites for the top two positions and duly obliged albeit in contrasting styles. The smooth Matherson was not the best away but recovered to blast away the field in 10.42 seconds. Russell got perhaps the worst start of his season and looked well out of contention for a medal before powering through in the last 20m to secure the Silver in 10.60. BOOM! Another quinella for Team Jamaica in U-18 Boys 100M FINAL! Jhevaughn Matherson GOLD in 10.42 and Dejour Russell SILVER in 10.60. #Carifta2016 #TeamJamaica #Jaminate Posted by Team Jamaica on Saturday, March 26, 2016 […]

A few weeks ago, Hamilton College senior Arthur Williams received an unexpected phone call from the White House. His entrepreneurship research in Cuba was of interest to the President’s speech writing team, who consulted with Williams prior to President Barack Obama’s visit to the country this week. Visiting Assistant Professor of Government Omobolaji Olarinmoye is Williams’ advisor for the project and Visiting Assistant Professor of Africana Studies Reynaldo Ortiz-Minaya, an expert on Cuba, is his mentor. Posted by Sean Martinelli WUTR on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 The Hispanic studies major and public policy and Africana studies double minor was enjoying his first week of spring break in New York City after the Nasdaq summit when he got a message that the White House was trying to reach him. Williams confessed that he first thought the call was “a bad prank,” but when he called back he learned the request was legitimate. The caller wanted to talk about Williams’ Emerson grant research on Cuban entrepreneurship. “It was kind of unbelievable actually,” Arthur told me when reflecting […]
