by admin· August 17, 2012· in Football, News, Sourced· 2384 comments
The Reggae Boyz Continued their World Cup Qualification Preparation with a 2-0 win over El Salvador in the RFK Stadium in Washington DC. Luton Shelton scored the brace which gave Jamaica the victory. Shelton brings his tally to 33 goals in 63 games for Jamaica. The Last Time Luton Scored for Jamaica was back in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup vs Grenada.   The Jamaican’s started attacking from the get go and Luton Shelton no surprise, gave a wake up call to El Salvadorian Goal Keeper Dagoberto Portillo however he made a fine save in the early stages. Andre Campbell also got into the action moments later, however keeper Portillo was agile on the occasion. Jamaica made the break through in the 16th minute through a diligent build up of passes and Luton Shelton Calmly finished. The El Salvadorians started to press higher looking for an Equalizer, however Shavar Thomas and Jermaine Taylor took the sting out of their attack.   A debut was handed to 21 year old Mercurial Talent Darren Mattocks in the midway point of the 2nd half and he showed his flair and his silky skills from early. He was able to find gaps in between […]

I have no respect for Carl Lewis, says Bolt

by admin· August 10, 2012· in London 2012, News, Sourced, Track and Field· 2230 comments
LONDON (Reuters) – Newly-crowned “greatest-ever sprinter” Usain Bolt said on Thursday he had lost all respect for Carl Lewis, the man whose on-track exploits he has surpassed with his unique Olympic double-double but who still leads the way in self-regard. American Lewis is the only other man to win two Olympic 100m gold medals, the second coming in 1988 when he was promoted from second place after the disqualification of Ben Johnson. He won the 200m in 1984 but managed only silver four years later. He did, however, have a remarkable run of success in the long jump, winning that event in four successive Games for a tally of nine golds in all. In the wake of Bolt’s triple-gold record success in Beijing Lewis was quick to point the finger of suspicion at him and Jamaica in general. “I think there are some issues,” he said at the time. “Countries like Jamaica do not have a random (drugs testing) program, so they can go months without being tested. I’m not saying anyone is on anything, but everyone needs to be on a level playing field. “I’m not saying they’ve done anything for certain. I don’t know. But how dare anybody […]

Yohan Blake Could Be Fined For Wearing A $500,000 Watch In The 100

by admin· August 09, 2012· in News, Sourced, Track and Field· 15716 comments
Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake could be a gold medalist in the 200-meter sprint, if he can find a way to top Usain Bolt. Yet Blake’s wrist might get much more attention from the International Olympic Committee than Bolt’s entire body thanks to something Blake wore during the 100 final: A custom, $500,000 watch made by designer Richard Mille.   As reported by Britain’s TNT Magazine and a handful of other English sources, the watch, which you can see in the photo on the right, is a customized sports watch in the green and yellow colorway of the Jamaican flag. Officially, the timepiece is called a Richard Mille Tourbillion watch, and the one-of-a-kind piece of functional jewelry was designed specifically for Blake to wear at the Games.   Blake followed through on his part of the bargain, wearing the watch during the semifinals and finals of the 100-meter dash, an event in which he finished second, behind countryman and world record holder Usain Bolt.   Yet that has infuriated IOC officials, who have phenomenally strict regulations about what athletes are allowed to wear while competing at the games. According to strict sponsorship regulations, Olympic athletes are only allowed to wear gear […]

Yohan Blake: Each man for himself

by admin· August 01, 2012· in London 2012, News, Sourced, Track and Field· 1577 comments
Four years ago, Yohan Blake was just out of school and watched at home in Jamaica as Usain Bolt set the sporting world alight at the Beijing Olympics. A few weeks later, the teenager joined Bolt’s training camp, where he turned his natural pace into a talent which many believe could bring an end to his compatriot’s reign as Olympic 100 metres champion. The two, separated by three years, still train together under coach Glen Mills and remain firm friends who share a passion for cricket. Blake’s apparently fearsome nickname, “The Beast”, was coined by Bolt himself in recognition of the young sprinter’s prodigious appetite for training.   When the two Jamaicans get into the blocks for the 100 metres final at the London Olympics on Aug. 5, however, there will be no consideration for reputation or friendship. “Well Usain, we’re always friends, we always joke around in training every day. We always have fun. When we’re training we just have fun,” Blake, 22, told a news conference on Wednesday.   “On the day it’s all business, win or draw we’re going to be still friendly, we’re just keeping a good chemistry going on into the Olympics, but when we […]

London’s calling Veronica Campbell-Brown

by admin· July 31, 2012· in London 2012, News, Sourced, Track and Field· 1145 comments
London – Defending 200m Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown fine tuned her preparations for what will be her fourth Olympic Games… “I had a rather quiet July as I focused primarily on fine-tuning for the Olympic Games. It seems so hard to grasp that London will represent my fourth Olympic Games, let me see, Sydney, Athens, Beijing and now London. “Time certainly moves fast in a sport where being faster is one of the Olympic Games motto. “Prior to reaching England, I competed once in Luzern, Switzerland. It was my first time there and I have a very hard time choosing between the hospitality received and the lush scenery of this Swiss city as to which impressed me more. “Unfortunately, I was not able to reward my hosts and the wonderful spectators who turned out with a victory as I finished second in my 200m race. “The responses from my fans following this race provided me a sweet reminder that there are supporters who will be with you whether you are winning or not. “From Switzerland I move on to Birmingham where Jamaica had its training camp. The food was excellent and the weather quite manageable. “July is Wimbledon and I […]

Jamaica ranked 14th out of 89 countries in 2008 Beijing Olympics

In Beijing (2008) alone, they brought home six gold, three silver and two bronze medals, ranking Jamaica at 14th position, over countries like Spain, Brazil, Denmark and Sweden. Jamaicans have seen the black, green and gold flag fly high since our first appearance at the Olympic Games in 1948. This time around, we are expecting greater historical moments, despite the negative comments that have been made lately. Excited and proud Jamaicans here and abroad will celebrate our titleholders and the world will celebrate with us. Music will fill the air to pay tribute to our winners and there will be no doubt that the bar has been raised even higher. Usain Bolt: ‘I’m ready to go’ at press conference in London

by admin· July 26, 2012· in News, Sourced, Track and Field· 1146 comments
Olympic champion Usain Bolt has said he will be “ready to go” at the Olympic Games after recovering from a stiff back and hamstring problems. Fitness concerns have dogged the 25-year-old’s build-up to the Games where he will be defending his 100 metres and 200m titles.     Bolt, who will carry the Jamaican flag at tomorrow’s opening ceremony, said: “I have been training great over the past two-and-a-half weeks so everything is coming together. “I had slight problems but nothing too serious. I am ready to go.” In June, Bolt was surprised in the 100m final at the Jamaican National Championships and Olympic trials when he was beaten by world champion and his training partner Yohan Blake.   Blake ran 9.75 seconds, it was the fastest 100 metres in the world this year. Bolt was second in in 9.86 seconds. Just 48 hours later, Bolt suffered his second loss Yohan Blake in the 200m final. Blake crossed the line in 19.80 seconds, 0.03secs ahead of the world record holder.   But now the champion has said he is ready to compete in the 100m, and achieve his aim “to become a legend”, they aren’t many who would bet again […]
