Chapeltown’s Yona Knight-Wisdom, whose father was born in Kingston, is officially Jamaica’s number one diver and has high hopes of joining Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake at the opening parade ceremony of the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Yona made his debut for Jamaica earlier this year when he competed at an international meeting in Dresden, Germany, advancing to the finals. This past Easter weekend, competing for his City of Leeds club, Yona won a Gold in the 1m event at the British Gas Elite National Junior Diving Championships, scoring 502, a new Personal Best. Knight Wisdom also won Silver in the 3m event. “I couldn’t be happier with these results and it gives me huge confidence for the summer international competitions”, said Yona, bubbling with enthusiasm. “It’s also a fantastic way to end my junior career.” [hr] [column2] [/column2] [column2_last] [/column2_last] [hr] The Elite National Championship is the highlight on the domestic junior calendar and was held at the John Charles Centre in Leeds, where the country’s top under 18 divers battled it out for honours. “British diving is at a really high standard at the moment with the likes of Jack Laugher and Tom Daley”, Knight-Wisdom confirmed. “It could […]

Better medal haul for Jamaica in Swimming

by admin· April 03, 2013· in Carifta, Diving, Images, Jamaica, News, Sourced, Swimming· 2301 comments tags: Athletics, Ato Boldon, Brussels, Brussels: Bolt comes back to Memorial, Carifta, Carifta 2013, Carifta U-17, Carifta U-20, Diamond League, Diamond League Brussels, Jamaica, Jamaica sports, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, U-17, U20, Usain Bolt
The National Aquatics Centre was briefly plunged into darkness six finals into the ultimate evening of competition at the 28th staging of the Carifta Swimming Championship. An announcement followed over the public address system, asking that the grandstand to the far side be evacuated. As the youngsters who became excited by the possible danger piled out, smoke was seen coming from the rear of the stand. The fire brigade was soon on the scene, as it was reported that there was a small fire coming from one of the generators. The area was cordoned off and persons were allowed to return to the stands and focus returned to the pool. This was the only dark spot on a bright night for Jamaica’s swimmers, as they bettered their medal haul from last year. At press time, with the six relays – yet to be contested – the country’s tally stood at 35: 11 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze. Jamaica also moved up on the points standings, as they occupied fourth with 508 points, having finished sixth last year. Guadeloupe (686) led ahead of Trinidad and Tobago (630) and Aruba (601). Last year, Jamaica won 32 medals.   Jamaica’s 11th gold […]

HAILING FROM Leeds but representing Jamaica, the main goal for three-metre diver Yona Knight-Wisdom is to represent the Caribbean country at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil. But like every sportsperson, the price of success is not cheap and the 17-year-old from Chapelton needed financial support to assist him with achieving his dream of competing in Rio. And thankfully for Yona, who won a gold medal at the British National Diving Championships in Plymouth in February, entrepreneur Levi Roots has committed to sponsoring the promising athlete.   Disclosing how he got in touch with the founder of Reggae Reggae Sauce, Yona told the Voice of Sport: “I sent him an email from the email address on his website saying what I was doing, what I was looking for, I sent him a video of some of my dives and they replied to me. They asked me to come down to London and have a meeting with them. I discussed it with my coach and with them and they were really happy give me some money for the next four years in the run up to the Olympics. “He was there in the meeting and he was asking me all […]

As widely anticipated, Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce were named the RJR Sports Foundation’s Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year at the awards ceremony at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel on Friday night. Bolt, who became the first man to successfully defend both sprint titles at the London Olympic Games, took the male award ahead of club-mate Yohan Blake, who was also the runner up to Bolt in both the 100 and 200 metres in London. It’s the fourth time Bolt was winning the prestigious award. Fraser Pryce who also defended the 100 metre title in London walked away with the top female award, ahead of swimmer Alia Atkinson, who placed fourth in the 100 metre breaststroke final. Atkinson also collected the People’s Choice award for her performance in the swim off to qualify for the final in London. The Chairman’s Award went to Paralympics competitor Alphanso Cunningham who also landed gold in the men’s F52/53 Javelin in  London. Alia Atkinson Wins First-Ever Medal for Jamaica at World Championships

by admin· December 15, 2012· in News, Swimming· 4053 comments tags: Alia Atkinson
Alia Atkinson won the silver medal Thursday in the Women’s 50m breaststroke in Istanbul, Turkey at the FINA World Swimming Short Course Championships, giving Jamaica their first-ever medal at the event. The 24-year-old Atkinson finished with a time of 29.67 seconds securing her silver medal and place on the podium. She has the rights to say that she is one of the five fastest women of all-time in the sprint breaststroke. Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania secured the gold for the third consecutive time and set a championship record with a time of 29.44 seconds. Her time was the second fastest time in history. Australian Sarah Katsoulis claimed the bronze with 29.24 seconds. The 15-year-old Meilutyte world record time is behind American Jessica Hardy, who recorded her world time of 28.80 on November 15, 2009. The United States does not recognize her time because she clocked it a technical suit, which was banned domestically in the United States. Atkinson set another national record while competing in the semi-finals of the 100m individual medley. She won the event in 58.94 seconds, which is the second fastest time in the world this year behind Katinka Hosszu of Hungry. Hosszu swam 58.83 at the […]

ALIA ATKINSON DIPS UNDER 30 SECONDS

by admin· November 25, 2012· in News, Sourced, Swimming· 1840 comments tags: Alia Atkinson
ON DAY 2 OF CANADA CUP Alia Atkinson racked up another 2 victories on day 2 of Canada Cup in Etobicoke, ON. Alia won the women’s 50 breast in Canada Cup record time of  29.87; a record which she previously set in the preliminaries earlier in the day.  Martha McCabe and Tera Van Beilen were second & third respectively with 31.34 and 31.58. For Atkinson, that was another Jamaican Record, and pushed her to 10th of all time. Atkinson is so incredibly strong, which is how she won an NCAA title (though in the 200) at A&M. Her long course has really come a long way since then, including a 4th-place finish at the Olympics in the 100 in 2012, but her short course hasn’t suffered one bit. Atkinson’s best swimming may be yet to come, and it’s encouraging to see the South Florida trained swimmer sticking around in the sport for now.   Alia also won the 100IM in a time of 59.96 (another personal best and National Record), but was dethroned in the 50 fly by 16 year old Noemie Thomas of Vancouver. Thomas clocked a 25.99 to Alia’s 26.85 andKaterine Savard’s 27.00. Savard had won the 200 fly earlier in the day […]
