Jamaican gymnast Toni-Ann Williams qualifies for Rio 2016 Olympics

by admin· July 03, 2016· in Gymnastics, Jamaica, Jamaica Olympics, Olympics, Rio 2016, Team Jamaica· 0 comments
Toni-Ann Williams makes history as the first Jamaican gymnast to qualify for Olympics. With a strong performance Sunday at the Olympic test event, Cal gymnast Toni-Ann Williams qualified for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Williams will be the first female gymnast to represent Jamaica at the Olympics. She finished 38th overall in the test event with a 52.931 total in the all-around. Her best score was a 14.066 on vault, which ranked 24th. She also finished in the top 35 on beam (13.666, 29th) and floor (13.366, 32nd). Williams earned an 11.833 on bars.   “What an amazing accomplishment,” Cal and Jamaica head coach Justin Howell said in a news release. “It’s a little surreal at the moment, but we believed without a doubt that she would qualify.”       Williams balanced her Olympic training with her responsibilities to Cal. The Randallstown, Md., native earned a pair of All-Pac-12 First Team honors, her second West Region Gymnast of the Year award and her fourth career Regular-Season All-America title. To compete at the Rio Olympic Test Event, she missed the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships. “The rigor of Cal prepares our student-athletes for excellence,” said Howell, who […]

The Story of Lovers’ Leap St. Elizabeth, Jamaica

by admin· February 14, 2016· in Jamaica, Lifestyle, Vacation· 0 comments
The beauty spot known as Lovers’ Leap emerges where the Santa Cruz mountains come to an abrupt end at Jamaica’s south coast, exposing a 1,700ft vertical drop down to the waves crashing on Cutlass Bay below. The lookout provides a fantastic vantage point to look for miles out to the Caribbean Sea. Along the coast the view stretches as far as Rocky Point (Clarendon) to the East and to Treasure Beach in the West. You will be reminded of how high you are standing when you notice birds, clouds and light aircraft flying below you!   The legend of Lovers’ Leap Lovers’ leap is named after two slave lovers from the 18th century, Mizzy and Tunkey. Legend has it that their master “Chardley” took a liking to the girl and, in a bid to have her for himself, he arranged for her lover to be sold to another estate. The pair fled to avoid being separated but were eventually chased to the edge of a large steep cliff. Rather than face being caught and separated, the pair chose to end their lives by jumping together. However, the exact details of the story vary depending on who is telling […]

Usain Bolt coaches young sprinter in new Telkom commercial

by admin· February 10, 2016· in Jamaica, Jamaica Olympics, Jamaican Athletes, PUMA, Rio 2016, Team Jamaica, Track and Field, Usain Bolt· 0 comments
Usain Bolt plays coaching to young sprinter in a commercial published Tuesday Feb 9, 2016. The six-time Olympic champion sprinter acted in a one-minute spot for the South African telecommunications company Telkom. In true Bolt style, even the filming of the TV commercial had to be done at high pace. The athlete’s preparations ahead of this year’s Olympic Games remain his primary focus, and filming had to be carefully structured around his punishing training schedule. Filming took place in Bolt’s home base of Kingston, Jamaica, and the team, led by Telkom’s agency DDB, was given just three hours to complete the shoot. Bolt’s management worked closely with Telkom and DDB to ensure the developed concept would resonate with the superstar athlete. The storyline, which sees Bolt training and developing a young athlete, certainly achieved this. Telkom used cinema-style technology to produce the advert – which features a toddler track star in training – while keeping a realistic look and feel. As children have proportionately bigger heads, feet, hands and knees compared to adults, fat suit technology was used to allow an adult athlete to be filmed in the sporting sequences. This allowed seamless filming while maintaining the correct […]

Rare Bob Marley Interviews

by admin· February 06, 2016· in Bob Marley, Jamaica, Lifestyle, Reggae Music· 0 comments
Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945, in St. Ann Parish, Jamaica. In 1963, Marley and his friends formed the Wailing Wailers. The Wailers’ big break came in 1972, when they landed a contract with Island Records. Marley went on to sell more than 20 million records throughout his career, making him the first international superstar to emerge from the so-called Third World. He died in Miami, Florida, on May 11, 1981.     Bob Marley is regarded as a cultural icon who implored his people to know their history “coming from the root of King David, through the line of Solomon,” as he sang on “Blackman Redemption”; Bob urged his listeners to check out the “Real Situation” and to rebel against the vampiric “Babylon System”. “Bob had a rebel type of approach, but his rebelliousness had a clearly defined purpose to it,” acknowledges Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records, who played a pivotal role in the Bob Marley biography by introducing Marley and the Wailers to an international audience. “It wasn’t just mindless rebelliousness, he was rebelling against the circumstances in which he and so many people found themselves.”

Team Jamaica World Relays predictions

by admin· May 24, 2014· in Jamaica, JO Articles, News, Rio 2016, Track and Field· 0 comments tags: IAAF World Relays, Team Jamaica, Watch IAAF World Relays LIVE Stream
JOE SPEAKS Only an disaster of epic proportion can stop Jamaica from winning 3 definite gold medals with two additional almost in the bag. Wait, zip up the bag please.   I PREDICT GOLD FOR JAMAICA IN WOMEN’S 4X100 A botched exchange or dropped baton and it will not happen in the name of Jesus. Somebody bring me my church fan and my iced tea. Glory. L.O.L. No relation to Glory Alozie. DWL. As I said if we run Carrie to Stewart to Annie to Shelly then we win easily. MEN’S 4X100 Easy does it for this one. I am sure our junior team could beat the U.S. Again barring drama we should win easily. MEN’S 4X200 The world record could go but it’s too early in the season and everyone isn’t race sharp. It all depends on the lineup. Do I hear whispers from the penny section that they should add the 4X200 to the Olympics and World Championships? Talk up di tings. POSSIBLE GOLD WOMEN’S 4X200 It will be tough if we use the same four girls from the 4X100 to run in the 4X200. If both were straight finals then I would say hell yeah. A […]
