Jamaican gymnast Toni-Ann Williams qualifies for Rio 2016 Olympics

by admin· July 03, 2016· in Gymnastics, Jamaica, Jamaica Olympics, Olympics, Rio 2016, Team Jamaica· 0 comments
Toni-Ann Williams makes history as the first Jamaican gymnast to qualify for Olympics. With a strong performance Sunday at the Olympic test event, Cal gymnast Toni-Ann Williams qualified for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Williams will be the first female gymnast to represent Jamaica at the Olympics. She finished 38th overall in the test event with a 52.931 total in the all-around. Her best score was a 14.066 on vault, which ranked 24th. She also finished in the top 35 on beam (13.666, 29th) and floor (13.366, 32nd). Williams earned an 11.833 on bars.   “What an amazing accomplishment,” Cal and Jamaica head coach Justin Howell said in a news release. “It’s a little surreal at the moment, but we believed without a doubt that she would qualify.”       Williams balanced her Olympic training with her responsibilities to Cal. The Randallstown, Md., native earned a pair of All-Pac-12 First Team honors, her second West Region Gymnast of the Year award and her fourth career Regular-Season All-America title. To compete at the Rio Olympic Test Event, she missed the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships. “The rigor of Cal prepares our student-athletes for excellence,” said Howell, who […]

Scorching 10.70 WL as Thompson equals National record

by admin· July 03, 2016· in Jamaica Olympics, News, Rio 2016, Team Jamaica· 0 comments
In arguably one of the most scintillating displays of sprinting at Jamaica’s storied National Stadium, the irrepressible Elaine Thompson underlined her status as one of the favourites to win the 100m title at the Rio Olympics later on this summer. Thompson who had scorched the track with a frighteningly easy-looking 10.85 to win her semi-final, returned approximately two hours later to demolish a very strong field on her way to winning the 100m title in a national record equaling and world leading 10.70 (0.3 m/s). Left toiling in her wake were the two time Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce with a satisfying 10.93 (SB) and Jamaica’s newest member of the sub 11 club, Christania Williams 10.97. Thompson who celebrated her 24th birthday on June 28 is now the joint 4th fastest woman (tied with Fraser-Pryce) over the distance behind Florence Griffiths Joyner, Carmelita Jeter and Marion Jones. Many time national champion Veronica Campbell-Brown in a race eerily reminiscent of the 2008 Olympic Trials, got off to a horrible start and despite a gallant attempt was unable to reel in the fast starting trio of Thompson, Fraser-Pryce and the exciting Williams. Campbell-Brown finished 4th in 11.10, just ahead of Simone […]

Pullen hops, skips and jumps on board flight to Rio 2016

by admin· July 01, 2016· in Jamaica Olympics, Rio 2016, Team Jamaica, Track and Field· 0 comments
“I have been knocking on this door ever since I left high school and it finally opened. I am obviously not far away from the qualifying mark so without a doubt one would automatically assume I have plans for Rio 2016. Well, I am here to confirm that assumption. I do have plans for Rio.” Those were the words of Clive Pullen, the Jamaican Triple Jumper after cutting the sand at a then personal best of 16.54m while competing at the Tyson Invitational on February 13, 2016. Wins at the 2016 SEC Indoor and NCAA Indoor Championships boosted his confidence and some two months later the former Kingston College standout improved his personal record to 16.78m. The automatic qualifying mark for Rio 2016 (16.85m) was well within his reach, a small matter of less than 10cm away. The University of Arkansas Junior knew there were technical and approach flaws to address and went back to the proverbial ‘drawing board’ with his coaches in preparation for the big NCAA Championships and more importantly his ‘Mission Rio’ dreams. He failed to create an impression in the sand at the NCAA Division One Track and Field Championships but was still confident […]
