Two Olympic medallists are among five Jamaicans who returned adverse analytical findings for banned performance enhancing drugs at the National Championships in June. According to highly placed track and field sources, four of the athletes are in the senior ranks, while the fifth is a junior. Two of those athletes are sprinters while the other three athletes compete in the field events. [hr] [column2] [/column2] [column2_last] [/column2_last] [hr]

[hr] A goal from Aldo De Nigris early in the second half saw Mexico beat Jamaica 1-0 on the road in Kingston. It was the Mexicans’ first victory of the CONCACAF Hexagonal round and it sends them to the top of the six-team group, tied on points with Panama. The result leaves the Jamaicans’ hopes of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in tatters as they are rooted to last place on two points, with only one goal to show from their four games. The home side asked most of the questions early on, pressing up in attack and looking to lone striker Ryan Johnson as their outlet. The Mexicans were content to sit back on their heels and hope for the occasional counter-attack. The first chance of any note came after 12 minutes when Monterrey target-man De Nigris snapped a header from near the penalty spot on the end of a cross from the right side. It was well handled by Jamaican goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts. [hr] [column2] [/column2] [column2_last] [/column2_last] [hr] There were precious few chances of any consequence as the half wound down, but Mexico looked short on ideas going forward, even with De Nigris, Javier Chicharito […]

The Jamaica Masters athletics team to the Penn Relays capped off a fine performance at the relay carnival by grabbing 2nd place in the over 40 men’s 4×400 relay. The team of Daniel England, Chris Williams, Danny McFarlane and Christopher Grant did 3.25.60 behind SW Sprinters ‘A’ who clocked 3.24.97. The team might have won, but a mix-up which occurred with the registration of one of the original runners resulted in a last minute replacement having to be brought in. The 4×400 2nd place finish came following Friday’s ‘goldfest’ when the 4×100 metre relay team won the over 40 race in a record 43.58. This was after Chris Williams running in the 40-44 age division won the 100metres in 10.58 and Chris Faulknor did the same in the 50-54 category in 11.49. Speaking from his home in the US following his race, the ever popular Danny McFarlane says he was very pleased to have represented Jamaica in a masters event at the Penn Relays. “I had fun with the rest of the team and I will be doing my best to assist in raising the profile of masters athletics in Jamaica,” he said.   PENNSYLVANIA, USA: Wolmer’s Boys’ will be seeking to make history at this year’s 119th staging of the Penn Relays when they go in search of their fourth consecutive victory in the boys’ 4x100m. Wolmer’s and Kingston College currently share the honour of having won the race on three consecutive occasions at the annual relay carnival, but the Heroes’ Circle-based school’s coach, Christopher Harley, is keen on his boys taking sole ownership of the record. “I wouldn’t mind winning the fourth one in a row as it would be the first it has happened and it is good to rewrite history, so I want to get that in our name,” Harley said. “I think this is a good set of boys, although two of them are making their first appearance at the Penn Relays. “So, I hope that they will be able to adjust to the weather especially. But from experience, I know what to do to make sure that they are ready for the occasion and I think that we will be fine.” The four boys who are set to take to the track tomorrow to commence the defence of their school’s 4x100m title are Yaniek Hart, Raheem Robinson […]
