[hr] The Jamaican pre-World Championships training camp officially opened on Friday in Moscow, Russia, with just under 30 of the 44 athletes named on the team going through their paces under the watchful eyes of their coaches. Team Press Liaison Officer Dennis Gordon said that “27 athletes have arrived thus far and the entire contingent is expected to be here by Sunday”. Along with the local-based athletes including Olympic sprint hurdler Hansle Parchment, who left the island with members of the coaching staff on Wednesday, all three female sprint hurdlers Danielle Williams, Andrea Bliss and Shermaine Williams, Patricia Hall, as well as male intermediate hurdlers Leford Green and Isa Phillips were also present. The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) had named a 45-member team, but with the late withdrawal of 400m runner Akheem Gauntlett, only 44 will report to camp. The late withdrawal of the US-based Gauntlett has also prevented the JAAA from replacing him, as his withdrawal came after the July 29 deadline for entries to be submitted. Usain Bolt anchored a Jamaican relay team to victory Saturday at the London leg of the London Diamond League Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games in the Olympic Stadium, exactly a year after the start of the Summer Games in the British capital. The Racers Track Club finished the 4×100 race in 37.74 seconds, a day after Bolt’s victory in the individual sprint in the London stadium where he swept three gold medals last year. Bolt is warming up for the world championships in Moscow next month where he is looking to regain his 100-meter title. Saturday’s race could be the last time Bolt competes in Britain — unless the country changes its tax laws for overseas athletes. [hr] Jamaica will host Group Four of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-20 Women’s Tournament, starting from Tuesday. Bermuda, Cuba and Curacao will join the hosts in this group phase to be played at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex. The opening round of matches will begin on Tuesday, with Cuba facing Curacao followed by the second game when Bermuda go up against Jamaica. Jamaica will play Curacao Thursday while Bermuda will tackle Cuba. The final games will be played Saturday with Curacao encountering Bermuda and rivals Jamaica and Cuba face-off in the closing game of the tournament. Trinidad & Tobago and the Dominican Republic have secured the two spots available in Group One played in the Dominican Republic, which concluded with Trinidad and Tobago topping the group with six points, and Dominican Republic gaining three points to take second place. Both teams will advance to the finals set for October, in Puerto Rico. [hr] Dustin Brown, the 189th-ranked Germany-born Jamaican who saw off Spaniard Guillermo García-López in the first round, defeated 2002 Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt in straight-sets today. Hewitt, who eviscerated number 11 seed Stanislas Wawrinka on Monday, was in the dark about what to expect. “I’ve never really seen him play. I’ve never hit with him. Never really seen a lot of him,” Hewitt said. “I’ll have to be on my game.” He wasn’t. Even after Brown lost the third set – which saw Hewitt win six successive points in the tie-break – he smiled and headed off for a comfort break before gaining a double-break. His stablemate, Kemar Bailey-Cole, the next big thing from the Racers production line, was second in an impressive 9.98 with Nickel Ashmeade finishing third in 9.99. “For me, it’s all about qualifying. The trials is always to make the team, when it comes to championships is when it really matters,” were Bolt’s first words after his win. The biggest shock was perhaps Asafa Powell’s seventh-place finish in 10.22; not even good enough for a spot in the relay pool as it stands. “For me, Asafa has been through a lot this season, this is probably his third race he actually finished, so I’m surprised he actually came out here and finished a race, so for me, that’s good. The 30-year-old could only manage a 7th-place finish in the 100m event at the National Trials, with only the top three guaranteed spots at the athletic showpiece in Moscow.
