Two Jamaican teams ran below 40 flat at this year’s Boys Champs, Kingston College (39.85) and Munro College (39.92), as KC held off the furious closing rush of the Munro anchor, Delano Williams, who earlier in the meet had won the 100 and 200 (10.28/20.27), the 100 into a headwind. The Relays record is 39.78, by Wolmer’s in 2010. KC, however, is one of several Jamaican teams that have been hit by the chicken pox as a result of infection at this spring’s Carifta Games; it is not known if that includes members of this 4×1 team.
Wolmer’s, which has run 40.45 this spring, is trying to win its fourth straight 4×1, a feat accomplished only once previously (Mercersburg 1932-35). Kingston College, the first Jamaican school to win an event at the Relays (1964), has been shut out of this event since 1990. KC is led by Keniel Grant (10.42) and Tevin Lloyd Thompson (10.64). The top sprinter for Wolmer’s is Raheem Robinson (10.50).
The leading American team is Serra (Gardena, Calif.), which has run 40.97 this spring. The leading teams from the East Coast are Forest Park (Woodbridge, Va.) 41.98/1:28.06 indoor 4×2, Long Beach Poly (Calif.) 42.05, Knightdale (N.C.) 42.24/1:28.86, and the Virginia schools Salem (42.31) and Western Branch (42.37).
The other Jamaican contenders include Green Island (40.09), Jamaica College (40.54), St. Jago (40.72), Calabar (40.92), Manchester (41.34), Holmwood Tech (41.47) and Ardenne (41.47).

The Jamaican team Edwin Allen, which has run 8:54.68 this year, will be going for its third win in a row in the 4×8 and its sixth in the last decade.
The top American team may be Neenah, Wis., which ran 9:00.42 in 2012, the 5th-best time in the country last season and the Wisconsin state record. The Neenah Rockets 4×8 is comprised of Clair Knaus and three sisters – Alison, Jessica and Jennifer Parker. Alison is a senior, while Jessica and Jennifer, twin sisters, are juniors.
The leading Eastern teams are Holy Names, N.Y. (9:09.01); Great Valley, Pa. (9:09.15); Lake Braddock, Va. (9:11.35); Freehold Township, N.J. (9:11.69), and Bronxville, N.Y. (9:12.22). Bronxville, which has never won a race at Penn, is not able to use its 2:03 halfmiler, Mary Cain, last year’s mile champion, who no longer runs for the school.
Edwin Allen has five 800 runners at 2:13 or better — Marleena Eubanks (2:07.79), Atara Segree (2:11.30), Asshanni Robb (2:12.45), Derica Pitters (2:13.04) and Sanikee Gardner (2:13.63). The No. 2 Jamaican team this year is Holmwood Tech (9:03.31), led by this year’s Champs 800 winner, Chris Ann Gordon (2:09.56). Vere Tech, which has run 9:14.61, is led by Taska Johnson (2:08.73).

UTech
UTech is defending champion, but must contend with a potent Texas A&M squad that adds Ameer Webb, the NCAA 200 champion, to a team that finished 2nd a year ago. There’s also Penn State, which set the collegiate record indoors; St. Augustine’s, 1st at the Florida Relays in 1:22, and Mississippi State, winners of this event in 2010. LSU, winners in ’11, did not enter.
UTech
Nicholas Watson (20.68 PR) and Julian Forte (20.38) return from the team ran 1:21.71 a year ago. The Jamaican school also won this event in 2003, their lone victories at the Relays on the men’s side. Also expected on this year’s lineup are Adolphus Nevers (10.36) and a Barbadian, Nicholas Deshong (10.57).
Texas A&M
A&M returns Michael Bryan (20.80), Prezel Hardy (20.33) and Ricky Babineaux (21.04) from last year’s runnerup team and adds Webb (20.20w). The Aggies, who won this event at Penn in 2009, have already run 1:20.78 this season, to win Texas Relays. The Relays record is 1:19.67, set 13 years ago by TCU.
Penn State
The Nittany Lions broke the collegiate indoor record in January, running 1:24.70 with the squad of Emanuel Mpanduki, of Zimbabwe; Brandon Bennett-Green (21.13 best); Matt Gilmore, and Aaron Nadolsky (21.28). Nadolsky was a teammate at Altoona (Pa.) H.S. of Brady Gehret, who was a member of Penn State’s winning sprint medley team here last year.
Others
St. Augustine’s ran 39.46 and 1:22.42 at the Florida Relays, using a lineup of Josh Edmonds, Jermaine Jones, Taffawee Johnson and Dane Hyatt. Mississippi State expects to use Tavaris Tate (20.75), Jarrett Samuels, Daundre Barnaby and Brandon McBride, Clemson Spencer Adams, Tevin Hester, Warren Fraser and Reggie Lewis.

Long Beach Poly, anchored by its superstar Ariana Washington, goes for its 3rd consecutive win in the Girls 4×1. Poly ran 45.96 to win Mt. SAC over the weekend. They ran 45.72 in 2012, the #3 time in the country. Washington, named athlete of the meet a year ago for her brilliant anchor leg, has run 11.45/23.41. LBP also won the 4×1 at the Relays in 2003 and 1995, the only American team to win the event since 1981.
Jamaican squads have won all the others. This year’s top Jamaican team is Edwin Allen, which has run 44.85 and is led by Monique Spencer (11.58). Their other top teams this year are Holmwood Tech (45.09), led by Yanique Thompson (11.64); Vere Tech (45.36); St. Jago (45.56), and Wolmer’s Girls (45.15).
The leading team from the East is Medgar Evers, of Brooklyn, which ran 47.60 to win the NY Relays over the weekend and is led by the sprinter Kadecia Baird. Other top domestic teams include Southeast (Raleigh, N.C.) 47.1; Kings Fork, Va. (47.50); Winslow Township, N.J. (47.99); Delcastle Tech, Del. (48.05); New Rochelle, N.Y. (48.12); Nansemond River, Va. (48.14), and the Pennsylvania schools Cheltenham (48.18) and Swenson (48.41).
The other nation to watch is the Bahamas, represented by St. Augustine’s H.S., whose squad includes Devynne Charlton (11.60) and Keianna Albury (11.95).

Three Jamaican teams have run in the 3:30s this season, including Edwin Allen (3:36.67), the defending champions, and Holmwood Tech (3:37.44), runnersup last year. Both were soundly beaten at this year’s Girls Champs, however, by Vere Tech, which ran a stunning 3:30.51, far below the Relays record of 3:34.75 (Holmwood ’01).
At Penn, however, Vere will run without its ace, Shericka Jackson (51.60 400 PR), who has exhausted her four-year eligibility at the Relays. Based on PRs, the team will give up approximately six seconds in replacing her. They still have Olivia James (52.92), Yanique McNeil (53.38) and Derri-Ann Hill (56.13). Edwin Allen has six runners who have run under 57 flat, including Camira Haughton (53.99) and Monique Spencer (55.37). Holmwood Tech has Chris Ann Gordon (52.16) and Shadae Hylton (54.01).
The leading American team is Columbia (Maplewood, N.J.), which ran 3:42.03 indoors, the top time nationally. They are led by Olivia Baker (53.48 PR).
The #2 team indoors was Medgar Evers, of Brooklyn (3:47.29), whose anchor runner, Kadecia Baird, ran 51.04 in the 400 last summer. Baird won the bronze medal in the Carifta Games for Guyana this spring.
Other leading U.S. teams include Long Beach Poly (3:47.23); Woodbridge, Va. (3:47.27); Suffern, N.Y. (3:49.08); Swenson, of Philadelphia (3:52.29); South County, Va. (3:53.67); Penn Wood (3:54.07); Half Hollow Hills East, N.Y. (3:54.29), and Centennial, of Las Vegas (3:54.40). South County has Felecia Majors, a 20-foot longjumper and 12-foot pole vaulter who has run 53 seconds on a relay leg.
The other leading Jamaican entries are Wolmer’s (3:49.21), St. Jago (3:44.23) and St. Hugh’s (3:49.25).

Penn State won this event a year ago by nearly 3 seconds, running 3:18.47. The Nittany Lions will face two teams that have broken 3:20 already this spring, Mississippi State and Texas A&M, plus a host of other challengers including Middle Tennessee, Maryland/Eastern Shore, University of the West Indies, LSU and Duke.
Penn State
The Nittany Lions have enough depth in the 800 that they can afford to juggle their lineup and still expect to prevail, in this case substituting Ricky West, a newcomer who has run 1:46 in the 800, for Cas Loxsom, the 1:45 halfmiler who was last year’s winning anchor, in order to preserve Loxsom for other duties over the long weekend. West is expected to be joined by Emanuel Mpanduki, Aaron Nadolsky and Brandon Bennett-Green. Bennett-Green, who has run 45.94, was 3rd in the Big 10 400. Penn State has won this event the past two years.
Mississippi State
Winners of the Texas Relays in 3:18.09, with a lineup of Jarrett Samuels, Tavaris Tate, Daundre Barnaby and Brandon McBride. Barnaby, who has run 45.67, ran the 400 for Canada in the London Olympics, while his fellow Canadian, McBride, was 6th in the World Juniors 800 last summer and has run 1:46.07 at that distance.
Texas A&M
The Aggies, who have never won this event at Penn, ran 3:18.85 for 2nd at Texas. They plan to use a lineup of Ricky Babineaux (21.04), Aldrich Bailey (20.80w), Bralon Taplin (45.36) and the freshman Hector Hernandez. Hernandez ran 1:49.33 to win the Texas 5A state meet last year for Killeen.
Others
Middle Tennessee has an international lineup of Emmanuel Tugumisirize, of Uganda (46.51); Noah Akwu, of Nigeria (20.54); Andre Hamilton, of Canada (47.37), and the Kenyan halfmiler Eliud Rutto (1:46.5). UMES plans to use Navon Spencer, of Jamaica; Marcus Wallace, of Winter Garden, Fla.; Aaron Chatman, of Waldorf, Md., and Zavior Brown, of Middletown, N.Y., the IC4A runnerup this winter in 1:49.48. The Jamaican team UWI returns Nicholas Maitland (45.79) to a team that won an unseeded section a year ago; he will be joined by Jowayne Hibbert, Dwayne Ferguson and Deuce Carter. LSU expects to anchor with Quincy Downing, Duke with the decathlete Curtis Beach.
