Two-time Olympic 200 metre champion Veronica Campbell-Brown has been provisionally suspended by the International Association of Athletics Federations after she tested positive for a banned diuretic at the May 4 Jamaica International Invitational World Challenge meet in Kingston. The banned diuretic has been identified as Lasix which is a water pill that prevents a person’s body from absorbing too much salt, allowing the salt to instead be passed into the urine. Lasix also treats fluid retention in people with congestive heart failure, liver disease, or a kidney disorder such as nephrotic syndrome and is also used to treat high blood pressure. The Jamaican’s A and B sample came back positive which means she has committed a doping violation. Campbell-Brown has 14 days to submit in writing to the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association that she wants a hearing take place and according to the IAAF’s rules this must take place in 30 days. VCB could be given a warning or face a 2-year suspension from the sport.
[column2] [/column2] [column2_last] [/column2_last]
via og.nr
Brazil’s Alan Oliveira, the 200m T43/44 Paralympic champion is now the fastest leg amputee runner on earth after obliterating the 100m T43 world record on Saturday (15 June) at the IPC Athletics Grand Prix in Berlin, Germany. The 20 year old led from start to finish to record a legal and official time of 10.77 seconds. His time is 0.14 seconds faster than the previous T43 world record of 10.91 which was jointly held by South Africa’s Oscar Pistorius, set in April 2007, and USA’s Blake Leeper posted last July. The time is also 0.08 seconds faster than the 100m T44 world record of 10.85 seconds held by Great Britain’s Jonnie Peacock, which was unofficially equalled last Saturday by USA’s Richard Browne. In the build-up to this weekend’s races in Berlin and the US Paralympics Track and Field National Championships in San Antonio, Texas, it was Paralympic 100m silver medallist Browne who was the most vocal about breaking world records. The 21 year old even went as far as claiming that the 100m race at next month’s IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon, France would be a two horse race between him and Paralympic champion Peacock.
Glen Mills, the legendary Jamaican track coach, has expressed great sadness at news of the positive drug test of the outstanding female sprinter, Veronica Campbell Brown. While not commenting in detail on the test, Mills, in an interview with RJR Sports on Saturday, reiterated the stellar record of Campbell Brown over the years and her “solid reputation”. Accordingly, he said it was very important to await her explanation of the circumstances surrounding the positive test. Campbell-Brown’s positive drug test came at the Jamaica International Invitational World Challenge meet in Kingston on May 4. The seven-time Olympic medallist, who also has nine medals at the World Championships, tested positive for the prohibited substance, Lasix, which also goes by the name Furosemide. Lasix is a form of diuretic which promotes the production of urine and treats medical conditions, including high blood pressure and edema. It is viewed as a masking agent by the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA). It is understood that the Campbell-Brown, who was advised of the adverse finding last week, had the “B” sample tested at the WADA-accredited laboratory in Montreal, Canada on Thursday, which returned positive.
So, the news is finally out and many Jamaicans are in a state of shock. Jamaica’s ‘queen of the track’, Veronica Campbell Brown has failed a drug test. The two-time Olympic gold medalist, defending 200-metre world champion, and 100-metre world champion returned an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) after competing at the Jamaica International Invitational on May 4, 2013 at the National Stadium here in Kingston. For two days after the news first broke that one of Jamaica’s star athletes had failed a drug test, Jamaicans waited on pins and needles to hear who that athlete was. On Friday night, their worst fears were realized. Many couldn’t believe it. They still can’t and have simply chosen to run away from it. VCB was perhaps the most ‘pure’ of our stars. Most of us don’t know very much about her because of her very rigid approach to her privacy but we love her because she is ‘humble’, a trait most Jamaicans seem to connect with. We see Bolt, the fastest man alive ever, and commercially the most successful track and field athlete in history, as being cocky but to us VCB seemed like a sweet innocent soul who has been winning […]
Tottenham Hotspur played out an entertaining 0-0 draw with the Jamaican national team as part of their post-season trip to the Bahamas. But a 39th-minute injury to Kyle Walker soured the stalemate between Spurs and Theodore Whitmore’s side, as the defender hobbled off following a strong challenge by Evan Taylor. Andre Villas-Boas left Gareth Bale on the bench for the clash in the Bahamas, but named a strong side including Walker, Mousa Dembele, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jermain Defoe. The Portuguese’s impressive lineup was matched by his side’s laudable intent from the off, and Spurs took only seven minutes to direct a shot at goal, with Defoe narrowly hitting it over after a Lewis Holtby corner The Concacaf outfit, clearly keen to maintain a competitive edge throughout this post-season friendly, also came close within the opening 20 minutes with Jeremie Lynch and Jermaine Hue threatening Brad Friedel’s goal.
[column2] [/column2] [column2_last] [/column2_last]
Their pressure nearly told shortly after the half hour mark as Keammar Daly bent a superb effort onto the American’s far post, with Tottenham’s early intensity having dissipated in front of a noisy, atmospheric crowd at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium. Spurs were then dealt […]
Jason Morgan is one of the most determined Jamaican sport personalities that I know. The former Calabar High School man virtually coached himself to the Olympic Games in 2012 and a couple IAAF World Champion-ships before that with little resources, all while juggling a regular 9-5. That has changed and the 30-year-old is taking the first steps towards a successful 2013 season. Let’s get to really know that man who shared many an Olympic headline with Usain Bolt, as he speaks about his love for the women’s 100m, his area-leader-type nickname, his days as a sprinter, as well as the painful death of his mother – something he is reminded of every day; none more than on Mother’s Day itself.

Let’s Talk! André Lowe (AL): Jason ‘Dadz’ Morgan; first of all, explain to me why people call you ‘Dadz’, makes you sound like a little area leader or something? Jason Morgan (JM): (laughs) The name ‘Dadz’ is timeless! I am a leader, but not an area leader. Seriously though, I have had that name since my time at Waterford Primary School in grade four. I guess I’ve shown leadership skills since a young age. AL: Let’s hear […]
KINGSTON — The following are results from the elite events at the 2013 Jamaica International Invitational track and field meeting, which took place at the National Stadium in Kingston on Saturday night. The meeting, which showcase several of the world’s best athletes in both running and field events, was also without several superstars who are recognised both locally and globally. Amongst them were six-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt and his training partner Yohan Blake, who were both out because of hamstring injuries. Also missing the meeting was former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell, who remains cautious after picking up a minor groin and hamstring injury earlier this season. Carmelita Jeter, the American sprint sensation also missed the meet with a minor injury and she was very disappointed about not being able to compete in front of the Jamaican track and field fans. The meeting, at the same time, featured the likes of Veronica Campbell-Brown and Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica, who took the women’s 100m and 200m sprints in respective times of 11.01secs and 22.38secs. Jamaica’s Stephanie McPherson shocked everyone to win the women’s 400m dash in a personal best 50.43 to win American Tyson Gay produced […]
