[hr] Brazil’s Alan Oliveira, the 200m T43/44 Paralympic champion is now the fastest leg amputee runner on earth after obliterating the 100m T43 world record on Saturday (15 June) at the IPC Athletics Grand Prix in Berlin, Germany. The 20 year old led from start to finish to record a legal and official time of 10.77 seconds. His time is 0.14 seconds faster than the previous T43 world record of 10.91 which was jointly held by South Africa’s Oscar Pistorius, set in April 2007, and USA’s Blake Leeper posted last July. The time is also 0.08 seconds faster than the 100m T44 world record of 10.85 seconds held by Great Britain’s Jonnie Peacock, which was unofficially equalled last Saturday by USA’s Richard Browne. In the build-up to this weekend’s races in Berlin and the US Paralympics Track and Field National Championships in San Antonio, Texas, it was Paralympic 100m silver medallist Browne who was the most vocal about breaking world records. The 21 year old even went as far as claiming that the 100m race at next month’s IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon, France would be a two horse race between him and Paralympic champion Peacock. [hr] So, the news is finally out and many Jamaicans are in a state of shock. Jamaica’s ‘queen of the track’, Veronica Campbell Brown has failed a drug test. The two-time Olympic gold medalist, defending 200-metre world champion, and 100-metre world champion returned an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) after competing at the Jamaica International Invitational on May 4, 2013 at the National Stadium here in Kingston. For two days after the news first broke that one of Jamaica’s star athletes had failed a drug test, Jamaicans waited on pins and needles to hear who that athlete was. On Friday night, their worst fears were realized. Many couldn’t believe it. They still can’t and have simply chosen to run away from it. VCB was perhaps the most ‘pure’ of our stars. Most of us don’t know very much about her because of her very rigid approach to her privacy but we love her because she is ‘humble’, a trait most Jamaicans seem to connect with. We see Bolt, the fastest man alive ever, and commercially the most successful track and field athlete in history, as being cocky but to us VCB seemed like a sweet innocent soul who has been winning […]

“I deserve government funding” – Alia Atkinson

by admin· January 17, 2013· in News, Profiles, Sourced, Taekwondo· 2345 comments tags: Alia Atkinson, Swimming
As the Government makes the final steps towards fulfilling a promise made to Jamaican swimming star Alia Atkinson, the 24-year-old has moved to defend the decision made to fund her $20-million 2016 Olympics training programme. Following a fourth-place, national record-smashing performance in the 100m breaststroke at last year’s Olympic Games in London, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller assured that the Government would help to fund Atkinson’s training expenses all the way through to the next Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. However, with the sport being dominated on many fronts by much younger swimmers, some have questioned the prudence of Simpson Miller’s pledge, calling instead for greater focus and support towards the island’s youth talent through the implementation of proper programmes and structure.     Prime minister surprised Atkinson, who had brief discussions with Simpson Miller and minister without portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for sport, Natalie Neita-Headley after the recent RJR Sports Foundation National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards, told The Gleaner that Simpson Miller expressed surprise that things weren’t already in place for the funding. “She (Simpson Miller) was surprised that she hadn’t heard anything from her staff, so she said she […]

He would like to make amends but he doesn’t look smooth. Churandy Martina Aww, this dude is hilarious. He bumped Gatlin when they both beat Asafa in the semis to advance to the finals of the 100 on Sunday night. Oh, how quickly we forget? In a desperate bid to get more medals, the U.S. track association showed footage of Martina stepping on the line several times resulting in his disqualification after placing second. In doing that the officials also realized that Spearmon also stepped on the line and was disqualified. Aii sa, tief never love fi see tief wid long bag. L.O.L. There was much anticipation around who would be selected the female team captain for the 2012 Jamaican Olympic team a few weeks ago. With an exceptional group of women fit for the position only one was chosen. The majority of the team and management stood behind the name of Novlene Williams-Mills. When you hear her story then you will see why she was the perfect fit for the part. Novlene Williams-Mills is the women’s 400m National Champion with a personal best of 49.63 seconds. Moving In Faith : Zara Northover

by admin· July 20, 2012· in Images, JO Articles, Profiles, Track and Field· 984 comments
Dreams are meant to become a reality and hard work is meant to be rewarded.  At all times God is to be Glorified and each step of the way one should keep Moving in Faith” ~ Zara Northover   There has been a Moving in Faith movement over the last few years and Zara Northover has been spreading the motto through t-shirts, bracelets and words of encouragement.   It all started in 2007 for Northover as she and fellow captains of the Women’s Track and Field program at Northeastern University in Boston came together to rally their team to win their first Colonial Athletic Association championship.  “My team needed uplifting and therefore other captains and I went out and bought tank tops that we designed together the night before our competition.  On the back of mine I wrote moving in faith and all my teammates names. During my speech I said that we are not doing this for just ourselves or our school, but this is for our family, each other and for God.  We just have to keep Moving in Faith because at all costs we will then be unstoppable.”  Needless to say Northover scored 34 points in the throws […]
