The 2017 ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Track and Field Championships got underway at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica with some outstanding performances on Day 1. There were no finals on the opening day of ‘Champs’ 107 but that did not stop records from falling. Several big names expected to be involved in marquee clashes all advanced with little fuss. Four records fell on the opening day including two within a minute of each other in the much anticipated Class Two Girls 100m hurdles. The red hot favourite Britany Anderson of Vere Technical lowered Peta-Gaye Williams’ mark of 13.38 in Heat 1 when she clocked 13.37 after a stutter at the start. In the very next heat the silky smooth Shannette Allison of Holmwood Technical underlined her credentials as a bona fide threat to Anderson by erasing the newly minted mark with a spanking 13.30. Also advancing was the dangerous defending champion Daszay Freeman of Manchester High (13.65). In the Boys Class Two 800m, the howling favorite Kimar Farquharson destroyed Aldwyn Sappleton’s 20 year old mark of 1.52.27 with a majestic run to take his heat in 1.51.26. The manner of Farquharson’s win suggests that he […]

Kevona Davis, the defending champion for the 100m and 200m in Class Three has been creating waves again this season and is the big favorite to not just retain the sprint double at ‘Champs’ but also carve her name in the record books. Davis who is part of a very strong Edwin Allen contingent that is expected to win its 4th straight and 5th overall title has been unstoppable all season, more often than not merely racing the clock. Shauna Helps’ Class Three 100m record of 11.50 seconds is officially on life support, if Davis’ pre-champs form is anything to go by and come Friday March 31, many are expecting the plug to be pulled on the Wolmerian’s five year old mark. Davis who won last year in 11.63, has already gone well under the Champs record and is the fastest schoolgirl on the season after clocking 11.43 to win the U18 100m at the CARIFTA Trials. Davis is also expected to be racing the clock when she contests the 200m. This time she will be chasing the record of 23.11 set by Champs legend Anneisha McLaughlin of Holmwood Technical High School in 2001. Many believe that if […]

Nicolee Foster has never won an individual Gold medal at ‘Champs’ and the versatile Holmwood Technical High athlete is on a mission to change that. The 2017 edition of the world’s premier high school track and field championships will present the outgoing senior with her best and final chance to grab a coveted Gold medal. Foster’s path to ‘Champs’ glory will not be an easy one, as she will face formidable opponents in her preferred event the 400m Hurdles and will have to overcome some hotsteppers if she chooses to compete in either the 400m or the 100m Hurdles. The 400m hurdles final is expected to feature Foster who was 3rd in last year’s final and two other finalists from 2016, Shiann Salmon of Hydel High (5th) and Sanique Walker of Vere Technical High (4th). The Holmwood Technical Team Captain is the season leader in the 400m Hurdles with 57.85 and sent a strong message to rivals with a well timed run to peg back a tiring Shiann Salmon to win at the CARIFTA Trials. Salmon (57.89) looked to have the race won with 20m to go but a determined Foster came with a late surge to […]

When ‘Champs’ 107 gets underway on March 28, one of the biggest favourites to win Gold will be Kingston College’s Carey McLeod. In fact many are expecting the former Garvey Maceo High School jumper to secure double Gold in his first championships competing for the famed ‘purples’ of North Street (KC). Those 18 points, if the early indications are anything to go by, could be pivotal in KC’s latest bid to wrest the Mortimer Geddes Trophy from the vice-like grip of Calabar High School who are seeking a 6th consecutive Boys’ title. McLeod who sat out Champs 2016 has been dominant in both the Long and Triple Jumps this season and should be too good for his rivals. He underlined his pre-champs status as the overwhelming favourite to take the Long Jump when he cut the sand at an impressive season and personal best 7.79m to win at the DIGICEL Grand Prix Finals. McLeod has four of the season’s top jumps including 7.55m at the CARIFTA Trials and 7.47m at the Gibson McCook relays. He failed to even make the finals of the event when he last competed at ‘Champs’ in 2015. McLeod, if conditions are ideal […]

The Bolt All-Stars claimed a narrow victory over Australia as the new team-based Coles Nitro Athletics Melbourne series got underway on Saturday (February 4). The series, which organisers hope will “revolutionise global track and field” saw Usain Bolt’s team take on squads from England, Australia, China, Japan and New Zealand, with athletes battling it out in the points-based competition which features power, endurance, technique and teamwork event categories. The first leg of the three-meet series came to a close with Bolt taking to the track to help a mixed 4x100m relay team secure success and also claim the overall win for the first night of action. Asafa Powell ran the first leg before handing the baton over to Jamaican sprint star Bolt. Then it was US sprinter Jenna Prandini’s turn to run the bend before USA’s Jeneba Tarmoh anchored the team to victory. Their winning time was 40.64 ahead of Japan and Australia. England’s quartet of Hannah Williams, Gabriel Odujobi, Confidence Lawson and Margaret Adeoye ran 42.68 for fifth. Source: Athletics Weekly Click to read more.
