It was the expected avalanche of medals on the closing day of the 46th CARIFTA Games in Curacao as Team Jamaica secured another 32 medals to equal the 2016 haul of 86. The medal chest contained 39 Gold, 28 Silver and 19 Bronze. Daniel Cope of Jamaica was responsible for a second championship record when he threw 61.25m to win the U18 Boys Discus Throw. Cope bettered the 2016 mark of 60.44m set by another Jamaican, Phillipe Barnett. Cobe Graham, Jamaica’s other competitor in the event secured Bronze with a mark of 52.71m. Kevin Nedrick closed his CARIFTA Games career with a full set of medals. Nedrick who won Bronze in the U20 Javelin and Silver in the Discus returned on the final day to win Gold in the U20 Boys Shot Put as Jamaica claimed yet another quinella. Nedrick’s 19.29m saw him finishing ahead of teammate Kyle Mitchell (18.72m). Sah-jay Stevens won Gold in the U20 Girls Javelin Throw with a best mark of 45.10m. Devia Brown (42.93m) finished 4th. Carey McLeod got Silver for Jamaica in the U20 Boys Triple Jump with a best effort of 15.81m. Teammate Gabriel Allen was 6th with 14.40m. For the […]

Quinella is a term most associate with 1-2 finishes in horse-racing, however the moniker ‘Team Quinella’ would be quite fitting for the all conquering Caribbean track and field kingpins Jamaica as its relentless medal rush continued unabated. At the close of proceedings on the penultimate day of the 46th CARIFTA Games, Jamaica had amassed another 26 medals for an overall tally of 54 (23 Gold, 19 Silver and 12 Bronze). As is now customary, the Black, Green and Gold clad standard-bearers ‘Jaminated’ with several quinellas in most of the events decided on Day Two. That level of domination was perhaps most evident in the one lap hurdles events where Team Jamaica secured the top two spots in three of the four races. Defending champion Sanique Walker made up for her below par performance in the flat 400m with a brilliant display to establish a new Games Record of 58.95 with teammate Taffara Rose (1.00.95) occupying the runner-up spot. The U20 Girls maintained the status quo with Nicolee Foster winning in 58.84 over High Jump Champion Shiann Salmon (59.45). There was a blot on the copybook in the U18 Boys as the Jamaicans proved no match for […]

Team Jamaica made a loud splash on the opening day of the 32nd CARIFTA Swimming Championships in the Bahamas. The aquatic standard-bearers from the land of wood and water secured 9 medals including 4 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze. It was not all about winning medals however, as some 24 personal milestones were established by our young ambassadors. Two national marks were also removed from the record books. CARIFTA debutant Nathaniel Thomas stormed to victory in the 50m Backstroke (11-12 category) in 31.64 seconds, the first time in 8 years that Jamaica was winning a medal in the event. A brilliant display by Sabrina Lyn in the Girls 11-12 100m Butterfly saw her not only winning the Gold in 1.07.22 but also becoming the first Jamaican girl to go sub 1.08.0 in the event. Her teammate Zaneta Alvaranga also acquitted herself well grabbing Silver in 1.08.02 (personal best) as Team Jamaica captured two podium spots and in the process got its highest placing in over a decade. Another national record set some 21 years ago was shattered as the quartet of Gabrianna Banks, Brianna Anderson, Simone Vale and Emily McDonald took the Girls 13-14 400m Freestyle […]

Dominating proceedings is nothing new to Team Jamaica at the CARIFTA Games and for the most part things went according to script on Day One of the 46th edition in Willemstad, Curacao. The Black, Green and Gold standard-bearers amassed 28 medals on the opening day including 12 Gold, 10 Silver and 6 Bronze. Pride of place went to throwers Roje Stona and Fiona Richards who were in record breaking form. Stona broke U20 Boys Discus Throw record with a mark of 66.41m to lead home compatriot Kevin Nedrick (60.38m) in what was one of six ‘quinellas’ on the day for the all conquering youngsters from Area Code 876. The impressive Richards was not to be outdone and was at her brilliant best in the Girls U20 Discus with four throws over 54.00m, moving the record to 54.19m. Teammate Gabrielle Bailey finished 5th with 45.47m. Team Captains Junelle Bromfield and Christopher Taylor led their troops from the front winning their respective U20 400m races with consummate ease. Bromfield showed her class in winning in a decent 53.82 with teammate Kimorla Mushette (55.62) narrowly missing out on the Silver medal after the times were rounded down to the […]

It took 16 months to get there, but Aljamain Sterling is finally back in the win column. The Serra-Longo product from Uniondale N.Y. did what he had to do against Augusto Mendes on Saturday at UFC on FOX 24, using his wrestling and his endless gas tank to earn a unanimous over Brazil’s Augusto Mendes. The judges’ scores in Kansas City were 29-28 across the board. The opening round was the fight’s closest. Sterling shot for a takedown, got it, and worked from top control. But Mendes, an elite grappler, began working for submissions from the bottom. Sterling used a blatant fence grab, which went unpenalized, to escape a leglock, then resumed control of the round. The second round was largely a standing clinch war near the fence, but Steling was up for the task, scored another takedown late, and added solid ground and pound offense for good measure. In the third, the onus appeared to be on Mendes to get something done, but Steling effectively shut him down, then landed big shots in the pocket late, in case there was any doubt. With the win, Stering (13-2) won for the first time since a finish of Johnny […]

Team Jamaica’s medal account opened in fine style with deposits from the field events on the first morning of the 46th CARIFTA Games. Jamaicans Janique Burger and Lamara Distin took the top two spots in the U18 Girls High Jump final. Burger won Gold with a best clearance of 1.77m ahead of teammate Lamara Distin (1.74m). In the U18 Girls Shot Put Danielle Sloley copped the Silver medal with a throw of 14.12m. Shaday Hudson finished 5th with 13.31m. The event went to Ianna Roach of Trinidad and Tobago (14.43m). Newly minted National Junior record holder Kevin Nedrick was the other Jamaican medalist on the opening morning where three finals were contested. Nedrick’s best of 60.40m saw him occupying the runner-up spot in the U20 Boys Javelin behind Keyon Burton of Dominica (62.14m). All eight Jamaicans progressed to the finals of the 400m scheduled for the afternoon session. Team captains Christopher Taylor and Junelle Bromfield won their respective heats to advance as the fastest qualifiers in the U20 category. Jamaican athletes are set to dominate at the 46th CARIFTA Games after some dazzling performances at the recent ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Track and Field Championships. Among those expected to thrill at the CARIFTA Games are Kevona Davis, Britany Anderson, Christopher Taylor, Dejour Russell, Michael Stephens, Janeek Brown, Junelle Bromfield, Timor Barrett, Michae Harriott, Cemore Donald, Carey McLeod, Kevin Nedrick and Antonio Watson. Kevona Davis may have left ‘Champs’ with the Class Three 200m record but is eager to set things right in the 100m after a much-debated false start which many believed robbed her of what was shaping up to be an assault on Shauna Helps’ 100m record. The CARIFTA U18 best of 11.28 set in 1998, some three years before Davis was born, could be under threat if the world number one ranked U18 sprinter gets ideal conditions. Britany Anderson has the four fastest times in the world in 2017 among U18 athletes over the sprint hurdles and barring the unforseen should rewrite the record books perhaps even break the 13 second barrier. Christopher Taylor is a household name in the Caribbean and needs very little introduction. He steps up to the U20 category but […]

Regional track and field powerhouse Jamaica is poised to once again ‘JAMINATE’ when it unleashes the customary heavy artillery at the 46th CARIFTA Games which gets underway at the Ergilio Hato Stadium in Willemstad, Curacao from April 15 – 17, 2017. Another dominating performance at the regional age group championships is envisaged as the perennial table toppers will be represented by a strong contingent of 84 with 41 girls and 43 boys competing across the Under 20 and 18 categories. Jamaica won 86 medals at the 2016 CARIFTA Games held in Grenada and with a powerful team once again set to don the famous black, green and gold, the regional kingpins could emulate or even surpass that medal haul. The Under 18 Girls cohort is headed by ‘Champs’ record breakers Kevona Davis and Britany Anderson as well as US-based sprinter Brianna Williams. Others such as defending sprint hurdles champion Daszay Freeman and standouts Michae Harriott, Cemore Donald and Lamara Distin are also expected to lead the medal rush in this category. Junelle Bromfield who won the 800m in 2016 is the headline act among the Girls U20 team and will be looking to stamp her class […]
