A moment with Novlene Williams-Mills

by admin· August 03, 2012· in JO Articles, London 2012, Profiles, Real Talk with Team Jamaica, Track and Field· 2502 comments
There was much anticipation around who would be selected the female team captain for the 2012 Jamaican Olympic team a few weeks ago. With an exceptional group of women fit for the position only one was chosen. The majority of the team and management stood behind the name of Novlene Williams-Mills. When you hear her story then you will see why she was the perfect fit for the part. Novlene Williams-Mills is the women’s 400m National Champion with a personal best of 49.63 seconds. She is a very pleasant and fun individual to be around. She is a hard worker with a focused work ethic that doesn’t allow anyone or anything to get in the way of her success. She said her most joyous and prized trait is being a devout, loving and caring wife. She is very confident and is looking forward to leading the team to creating history in London. TeamJa.org reached out to Clora Williams sister of Novlene who is another decorated athlete for Jamaica to see what she had to say: “I am very proud of my sister. She is my biggest motivation in life. She inspires me to become a better person and to be […]

Yohan Blake: Each man for himself

by admin· August 01, 2012· in London 2012, News, Sourced, Track and Field· 1578 comments
Four years ago, Yohan Blake was just out of school and watched at home in Jamaica as Usain Bolt set the sporting world alight at the Beijing Olympics. A few weeks later, the teenager joined Bolt’s training camp, where he turned his natural pace into a talent which many believe could bring an end to his compatriot’s reign as Olympic 100 metres champion. The two, separated by three years, still train together under coach Glen Mills and remain firm friends who share a passion for cricket. Blake’s apparently fearsome nickname, “The Beast”, was coined by Bolt himself in recognition of the young sprinter’s prodigious appetite for training.   When the two Jamaicans get into the blocks for the 100 metres final at the London Olympics on Aug. 5, however, there will be no consideration for reputation or friendship. “Well Usain, we’re always friends, we always joke around in training every day. We always have fun. When we’re training we just have fun,” Blake, 22, told a news conference on Wednesday.   “On the day it’s all business, win or draw we’re going to be still friendly, we’re just keeping a good chemistry going on into the Olympics, but when we […]

London’s calling Veronica Campbell-Brown

by admin· July 31, 2012· in London 2012, News, Sourced, Track and Field· 1145 comments
London – Defending 200m Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown fine tuned her preparations for what will be her fourth Olympic Games… “I had a rather quiet July as I focused primarily on fine-tuning for the Olympic Games. It seems so hard to grasp that London will represent my fourth Olympic Games, let me see, Sydney, Athens, Beijing and now London. “Time certainly moves fast in a sport where being faster is one of the Olympic Games motto. “Prior to reaching England, I competed once in Luzern, Switzerland. It was my first time there and I have a very hard time choosing between the hospitality received and the lush scenery of this Swiss city as to which impressed me more. “Unfortunately, I was not able to reward my hosts and the wonderful spectators who turned out with a victory as I finished second in my 200m race. “The responses from my fans following this race provided me a sweet reminder that there are supporters who will be with you whether you are winning or not. “From Switzerland I move on to Birmingham where Jamaica had its training camp. The food was excellent and the weather quite manageable. “July is Wimbledon and I […]
