Jamaica ranked 14th out of 89 countries in 2008 Beijing Olympics

by admin· July 27, 2012· in London 2012, Sourced, Track and Field· 1 comments
In Beijing (2008) alone, they brought home six gold, three silver and two bronze medals, ranking Jamaica at 14th position, over countries like Spain, Brazil, Denmark and Sweden. Jamaicans have seen the black, green and gold flag fly high since our first appearance at the Olympic Games in 1948. This time around, we are expecting greater historical moments, despite the negative comments that have been made lately. Excited and proud Jamaicans here and abroad will celebrate our titleholders and the world will celebrate with us. Music will fill the air to pay tribute to our winners and there will be no doubt that the bar has been raised even higher. Jamaica Medalists at the 2008 Beijing Games: Usain Bolt – Gold – Mens 100m – 9.69 seconds (World Record) Usain Bolt – Gold – Mens 200m – 19.30 seconds (World Record) Shelly-Ann Fraser – Gold – Womens 100m – 10.78 seconds (Personal Best) Melaine Walker – Gold – Womens 400m hurdles – 52.64 seconds (Olympic Record) Veronica Campbell-Brown – Gold – Womens 200m – 21.74 seconds (Personal Best) Team Jamaica – Gold – Mens 4x100m – 37.10 seconds (World Record) Sherone Simpson – Silver – Womens 100m – 10.98 seconds […]

Usain Bolt: ‘I’m ready to go’ at press conference in London

by admin· July 26, 2012· in News, Sourced, Track and Field· 3 comments
Olympic champion Usain Bolt has said he will be “ready to go” at the Olympic Games after recovering from a stiff back and hamstring problems. Fitness concerns have dogged the 25-year-old’s build-up to the Games where he will be defending his 100 metres and 200m titles.     Bolt, who will carry the Jamaican flag at tomorrow’s opening ceremony, said: “I have been training great over the past two-and-a-half weeks so everything is coming together. “I had slight problems but nothing too serious. I am ready to go.” In June, Bolt was surprised in the 100m final at the Jamaican National Championships and Olympic trials when he was beaten by world champion and his training partner Yohan Blake.   Blake ran 9.75 seconds, it was the fastest 100 metres in the world this year. Bolt was second in in 9.86 seconds. Just 48 hours later, Bolt suffered his second loss Yohan Blake in the 200m final. Blake crossed the line in 19.80 seconds, 0.03secs ahead of the world record holder.   But now the champion has said he is ready to compete in the 100m, and achieve his aim “to become a legend”, they aren’t many who would bet again […]

Usain Bolt to be Jamaica’s flag bearer

by admin· July 26, 2012· in News, Sourced, Track and Field· 1 comments
London – Defending double sprint champion Usain Bolt will be Jamaica’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, an official said Thursday. “I am delighted to announce Mr Usain Bolt as our flag bearer,” said Mike Fennell, president of the Jamaica Olympic Association. The 25-year-old Bolt, one of global sport’s most marketable personalities, transformed the world of athletics when he scorched to victory in both sprint events at the Beijing Games in 2008 in then-world record times. Bolt bettered his Olympic form at the 2009 Berlin worlds, setting current world records in the 100 and 200m of 9.58 and 19.19sec. He defended his world 200m title in Daegu last year but a false start in the final saw compatriot Yohan Blake claim victory in the 100m.

She is also the first Jamaican female to qualify with a throw of 61.21m to break a 26 year old record to represent Jamaica in the Olympics. After catching up with Allison you will see the true talent that she is and the bright future ahead of her. Allison was born in the states but her mother is from Kingston, Jamaica.  She is a true Jamaican at heart. She loves the culture, food and her home away from home.  Allison is all about the representing the Green, Black and Gold.  Since 2006 Randall has been throwing the shot put and 6 years later she is about to take on the main stage. (Allison)  I grew up playing basketball and tried discus since then the rest was history.  I started to get the urge in 2008 I knew I had the physical attributes of a world class discus thrower but lacked the knowledge of the event.  My coach Glenwood Edwards at the time refueled my fire and coached me to NCAA’s and I became more and more hungry […]
