[hr] Jamaican sprinting star Veronica Campbell-Brown had in fact declared using a product ahead of her positive drug test – a development, which could have a major impact on the outcome of the situation facing the 31-year-old. Importantly, however, it is also understood that there was no Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) in place, which means that she will still need to face a hearing. The TUE is a pre-approved facility, which allows athletes to use certain banned substances for medical conditions. Campbell-Brown’s ‘A’ sample, taken after her performance at the May 4 Jamaica International Invitational at the National Stadium, returned an adverse analytical finding, reportedly triggered by the presence of a diuretic. Up to last night, the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) had not received official notification of the findings of Campbell-Brown’s ‘B’ sample, but the association’s president, Dr Warren Blake, on Saturday did confirm that a Jamaican athlete had returned an adverse analytical finding from their ‘A’ sample at the meet. Diuretics are banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for their ability to mask the presence of performance-enhancing drugs. [hr] Glen Mills, the legendary Jamaican track coach, has expressed great sadness at news of the positive drug test of the outstanding female sprinter, Veronica Campbell Brown. While not commenting in detail on the test, Mills, in an interview with RJR Sports on Saturday, reiterated the stellar record of Campbell Brown over the years and her “solid reputation”. Accordingly, he said it was very important to await her explanation of the circumstances surrounding the positive test. Campbell-Brown’s positive drug test came at the Jamaica International Invitational World Challenge meet in Kingston on May 4. The seven-time Olympic medallist, who also has nine medals at the World Championships, tested positive for the prohibited substance, Lasix, which also goes by the name Furosemide. Lasix is a form of diuretic which promotes the production of urine and treats medical conditions, including high blood pressure and edema. It is viewed as a masking agent by the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA). It is understood that the Campbell-Brown, who was advised of the adverse finding last week, had the “B” sample tested at the WADA-accredited laboratory in Montreal, Canada on Thursday, which returned positive. [hr] So, the news is finally out and many Jamaicans are in a state of shock. Jamaica’s ‘queen of the track’, Veronica Campbell Brown has failed a drug test. The two-time Olympic gold medalist, defending 200-metre world champion, and 100-metre world champion returned an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) after competing at the Jamaica International Invitational on May 4, 2013 at the National Stadium here in Kingston. For two days after the news first broke that one of Jamaica’s star athletes had failed a drug test, Jamaicans waited on pins and needles to hear who that athlete was. On Friday night, their worst fears were realized. Many couldn’t believe it. They still can’t and have simply chosen to run away from it. VCB was perhaps the most ‘pure’ of our stars. Most of us don’t know very much about her because of her very rigid approach to her privacy but we love her because she is ‘humble’, a trait most Jamaicans seem to connect with. We see Bolt, the fastest man alive ever, and commercially the most successful track and field athlete in history, as being cocky but to us VCB seemed like a sweet innocent soul who has been winning […]

[hr] Jason Morgan is one of the most determined Jamaican sport personalities that I know. The former Calabar High School man virtually coached himself to the Olympic Games in 2012 and a couple IAAF World Champion-ships before that with little resources, all while juggling a regular 9-5. That has changed and the 30-year-old is taking the first steps towards a successful 2013 season. Let’s get to really know that man who shared many an Olympic headline with Usain Bolt, as he speaks about his love for the women’s 100m, his area-leader-type nickname, his days as a sprinter, as well as the painful death of his mother – something he is reminded of every day; none more than on Mother’s Day itself. [hr] [hr] Let’s Talk! André Lowe (AL): Jason ‘Dadz’ Morgan; first of all, explain to me why people call you ‘Dadz’, makes you sound like a little area leader or something? Jason Morgan (JM): (laughs) The name ‘Dadz’ is timeless! I am a leader, but not an area leader. Seriously though, I have had that name since my time at Waterford Primary School in grade four. I guess I’ve shown leadership skills since a young age. AL: Let’s hear […]

[hr] KINGSTON — The following are results from the elite events at the 2013 Jamaica International Invitational track and field meeting, which took place at the National Stadium in Kingston on Saturday night. The meeting, which showcase several of the world’s best athletes in both running and field events, was also without several superstars who are recognised both locally and globally. Amongst them were six-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt and his training partner Yohan Blake, who were both out because of hamstring injuries. Also missing the meeting was former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell, who remains cautious after picking up a minor groin and hamstring injury earlier this season. Carmelita Jeter, the American sprint sensation also missed the meet with a minor injury and she was very disappointed about not being able to compete in front of the Jamaican track and field fans. The meeting, at the same time, featured the likes of Veronica Campbell-Brown and Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica, who took the women’s 100m and 200m sprints in respective times of 11.01secs and 22.38secs. Jamaica’s Stephanie McPherson shocked everyone to win the women’s 400m dash in a personal best 50.43 to win American Tyson Gay produced […]

[hr] Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell-Brown and USA’s Allyson Felix clash over 100m should be the highlight of the Jamaica International Invitational, an IAAF World Challenge meeting, in Kingston on Saturday. Campbell-Brown and Felix have faced each other over 100m on seven occasions with former crossing the line in front six times, three of which came in the USA. Both will meet in Jamaica for the first time and Campbell-Brown, who is considered the reigning queen of Jamaican track and field, will want to give local fans something special to remember. Felix, who will be running in Jamaica for the first time since the 2002 World Junior Championships, said, “I am happy to be back in Jamaica since 2002 World Junior and I am really looking forward to it. We (Felix and Campbell-Brown) have always had good battles over the years and this time is no different,” Campbell-Brown added: “It’s always a pleasure and it’s always so much fun and exciting to compete at home so I’m looking forward to entertaining all the fans that are coming out to support us.” Campbell-Brown has two Olympic Games 200m titles, and also one each over 100m and 200m at the IAAF World Championships while […]
