Since turning pro several years ago, Jamaican Olympic discus competitor Jason Morgan has led a one-man band; coaching, conditioning and representing himself on the lower US circuit. However, the 30-year-old is taking a new approach for the 2013 season, joining forces with noted collegiate throws coach, Russian Andy Kokanovsky and physical trainer Rob Gire, and so far things seem to be heading in the right direction. Having measured a 65.94m throw at a meet in Los Angeles earlier this month, which now registers as his official personal best, Morgan is the second best thrower in the world this year behind Australian Julian Wruck, who leads the world with a 66.32m mark and is also responsible for the next two best distances.   “It’s been a good year for me so far. Just the approach of having two coaches working with me right now has made a big difference,” said Morgan, who doubles as a therapist at a children’s home in Louisiana. “Andy (Kokanovsky) saw where I have been competing and training by myself over the years, so we have been communicating via email, videos and Skype and everything,” Morgan added. “He sets my workouts for me, I send him […]

The Jamaica Masters athletics team to the Penn Relays capped off a fine performance at the relay carnival by grabbing 2nd place in the over 40 men’s 4×400 relay. The team of Daniel England, Chris Williams, Danny McFarlane and Christopher Grant did 3.25.60 behind SW Sprinters ‘A’ who clocked 3.24.97. The team might have won, but a mix-up which occurred with the registration of one of the original runners resulted in a last minute replacement having to be brought in. The 4×400 2nd place finish came following Friday’s ‘goldfest’ when the 4×100 metre relay team won the over 40 race in a record 43.58. This was after Chris Williams running in the 40-44 age division won the 100metres in 10.58 and Chris Faulknor did the same in the 50-54 category in 11.49. Speaking from his home in the US following his race, the ever popular Danny McFarlane says he was very pleased to have represented Jamaica in a masters event at the Penn Relays. “I had fun with the rest of the team and I will be doing my best to assist in raising the profile of masters athletics in Jamaica,” he said.   DES MOINES (Iowa): Jamaican Andrew Riley crashed the Olympic 110m hurdles reunion on Friday, edging London Games gold medallist and world record-holder Aries Merritt at the Drake Relays athletics meeting. Riley, a 24-year-old who recently completed a US collegiate athletics career, with Merritt settling for second in 13.48 in a race that featured all three medallists from last year’s London Games. Riley won in 13.43. London silver medalist Jason Richardson was disqualified because of a false start and Jamaican Hansle Parchment, third in the Olympics, ran a disappointing 14.33. “It means a lot,” Riley said of the triumph in the talent-packed field. “Hurdles is one of those events where we don’t duck and dodge each other like the 100 metres. “In the hurdles we race each other week-in and week-out so a field like you just saw today you’ll see many, many times again this season, which is a really good thing for the sport and hopefully people can see the hurdles as a marquee event.” Merritt, who followed up his Olympic gold medal by setting a world record of 12.80 at Brussels in September, pronounced himself satisfied with the race, especially since his training has been hindered by […]
