Yona Knight-Wisdom came 23rd in the 1M springboard at the World Championships Yona Knight-Wisdom made history as he became the first Jamaican diver to compete at a World Championships when he appeared in the heats of the one-metre springboard in Barcelona. Born and bred in Leeds, Knight-Wisdom had a three-way choice of which country to represent – Jamaica from his father’s side, Barbados from his mother’s or Great Britain. He chose Jamaica and received his passport in January last year before becoming the first Jamaican male diver to compete internationally. Knight-Wisdom represented Jamaica for the first time in April 2012 in Germany, and on Saturday he came 23rd in the 1m springboard in only his fifth international competition.
[column2] [/column2] [column2_last] [/column2_last]
He was four places behind Britain’s Jack Laugher, who he trains with under former world champion Edwin Jongejans in Leeds. While Betsy Sullivan represented Jamaica at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Kingston at the grand old age of 10 before going on to the 1972 Olympics, Knight-Wisdom is the spearhead for the sport in Jamaica today. He told Press Association Sport: “They have the framework but they don’t have any springboards. So, if they can get […]

Two of those athletes are sprinters while the other three athletes compete in the field events.
[column2] [/column2] [column2_last] [/column2_last]

Having not been able to field the number of student-athletes desired to the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia, nor persons in other sporting disciplines besides track and field, the Jamaica Intercollegiate Sports Association is taking solace in the number of competitors that will feature in field events and the jumps. The team to the July 6-17 Games departed the island in two batches yesterday, with three of the eight members down to compete in the triple jump, shot put and discus. “This year is very significant because half of the team is field events persons,” Intercol executive and manager of the travelling team, Rashid Hall, “The opportunity is there for them to really showcase that Jamaica is not just track, but also about field.” Jamaica’s delegation was originally set to comprise 22 members, but was reduced to 10 due to financial constraints. The team was further lessened to eight after 110m hurdler Deuce Carter of the University of the West Indies (UWI) suffered an injury ahead of last month’s national trials, and 400m hurdler Danielle Dowie of the University of Texas, Austin, deciding at the last minute to go to the CAC Games to be held in […]
Dustin Brown, the 189th-ranked Germany-born Jamaican who saw off Spaniard Guillermo García-López in the first round, defeated 2002 Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt in straight-sets today. Hewitt, who eviscerated number 11 seed Stanislas Wawrinka on Monday, was in the dark about what to expect. “I’ve never really seen him play. I’ve never hit with him. Never really seen a lot of him,” Hewitt said. “I’ll have to be on my game.” He wasn’t.   Even after Brown lost the third set – which saw Hewitt win six successive points in the tie-break – he smiled and headed off for a comfort break before gaining a double-break. Hewitt boasts a following second only to Murray at SW19 but Brown merely found the Fanatics “amusing”. Brown is no spring chicken. Aged 28, Wednesday was the first time he had reached the second round of the Championships and on Friday he will play in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time. In his first-round match, Brown reduced Garcia-Lopez to a spat with a member of the crowd on the outside courts.
A solid start and glances to his left and right with some 30 metres still left to run, Usain Bolt waltzed to a comfortable 9.94 seconds to win the men’s 100m at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association/Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships inside the National Stadium last evening. His stablemate, Kemar Bailey-Cole, the next big thing from the Racers production line, was second in an impressive 9.98 with Nickel Ashmeade finishing third in 9.99. “For me, it’s all about qualifying. The trials is always to make the team, when it comes to championships is when it really matters,” were Bolt’s first words after his win. The biggest shock was perhaps Asafa Powell’s seventh-place finish in 10.22; not even good enough for a spot in the relay pool as it stands. “For me, Asafa has been through a lot this season, this is probably his third race he actually finished, so I’m surprised he actually came out here and finished a race, so for me, that’s good. Now he can go on the circuit and make some money and get it done,” offered Bolt, sparing a thought for Powell. Kerron Stewart was also impressive, winning the women’s 100m in 10.96, her […]
Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell, who was once the world’s fastest man, last night tumbled out of contention for a spot at this summer’s World Championships in Russia, leaving a massive cloud of doubt over his future. The 30-year-old could only manage a 7th-place finish in the 100m event at the National Trials, with only the top three guaranteed spots at the athletic showpiece in Moscow. The shocking result saw the sprinter missing out on a top-three spot at the Jamaica National Trials for the first time since he rose to prominence. Current double world record holder Usain Bolt took the event in a pedestrian stroll clocking 9.94, with Racers teammate, Kemar Bailey-Cole, second in an impressive 9.98 and Nickel Ashmeade finishing third in 9.99. Powell clocked 10.22, a distant cry from his personal best of 9.72, which placed the sprinter comfortably among the biggest names in world sprinting. “It is very frustrating to know that I didn’t get to finish in the top three, but that is how it goes, I have to just work on it and try and come back,” Powell told The Gleaner. “I am not race fit and I have to just work on it.” […]
