The Jamaica Masters athletics team to the Penn Relays capped off a fine performance at the relay carnival by grabbing 2nd place in the over 40 men’s 4×400 relay. The team of Daniel England, Chris Williams, Danny McFarlane and Christopher Grant did 3.25.60 behind SW Sprinters ‘A’ who clocked 3.24.97. The team might have won, but a mix-up which occurred with the registration of one of the original runners resulted in a last minute replacement having to be brought in. The 4×400 2nd place finish came following Friday’s ‘goldfest’ when the 4×100 metre relay team won the over 40 race in a record 43.58. This was after Chris Williams running in the 40-44 age division won the 100metres in 10.58 and Chris Faulknor did the same in the 50-54 category in 11.49. Speaking from his home in the US following his race, the ever popular Danny McFarlane says he was very pleased to have represented Jamaica in a masters event at the Penn Relays. “I had fun with the rest of the team and I will be doing my best to assist in raising the profile of masters athletics in Jamaica,” he said. UTech, UWI, GC Foster in the mix at Penn Relays

Unlike our extremely successful high-school teams, our colleges have tougher times at the Penn Relays. However, 10 years after a historic first win by a Jamaican college at Penn, the University of Technology (UTech) is primed for speed in Philadelphia. The UTech Knights are the defending college men’s 4×200-metre relay champions, and Carrie Russell is in form in time to repeat as 100-metre winner. In addition, the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) Traves Smikle is favoured in the colleges’ men’s discus. Early in February, a UTech quartet of Tyqueando Tracey, Andrew Fisher, Julian Forte and Nicholas Watson combined to run the 4x100m in 38.80 seconds at the Milo Western Relays. Since the US outdoor season has begun, only Texas A&M University has bettered the UTech time with its own fast run of 38.64. UTech has come close in this event before. In 2003, an Asafa Powell squad had baton problems in the 4×100, but recovered to win the 4x200m. Last year, a baton fumble left UTech second, but again was the lead-in to a 4x200m victory. Injured while leading the 2012 World Junior Championships 200m final, Forte brings good karma to Penns. He was on winning Wolmers’ teams […]

PENNSYLVANIA, USA: Wolmer’s Boys’ will be seeking to make history at this year’s 119th staging of the Penn Relays when they go in search of their fourth consecutive victory in the boys’ 4x100m. Wolmer’s and Kingston College currently share the honour of having won the race on three consecutive occasions at the annual relay carnival, but the Heroes’ Circle-based school’s coach, Christopher Harley, is keen on his boys taking sole ownership of the record. “I wouldn’t mind winning the fourth one in a row as it would be the first it has happened and it is good to rewrite history, so I want to get that in our name,” Harley said. “I think this is a good set of boys, although two of them are making their first appearance at the Penn Relays. “So, I hope that they will be able to adjust to the weather especially. But from experience, I know what to do to make sure that they are ready for the occasion and I think that we will be fine.” The four boys who are set to take to the track tomorrow to commence the defence of their school’s 4x100m title are Yaniek Hart, Raheem Robinson […]

In a sensational final day of the 2013 Inter-Secondary Sports Association (ISSA)/Grace-Kennedy Boys and Girls’ Cham-pionships, Holmwood Technical High came from well behind at the National Stadium yesterday to clip defending champions Edwin Allen High for the girls’ title, while Calabar High easily retained the boys’ crown. In a meet which saw 18 records falling on the final day and 30 overall, Holmwood wore down long-time leaders Edwin Allen, took the lead in mid-afternoon and came away with a narrow victory. The Maurice Wilson-coached Holmwood tallied 310.5 points to regain the title, their 10th in 11 years with Edwin Allen on 305.5. The top five was completed by St Jago (208), Vere Technical (202) and Hydel (157.50). On the boys’ side, Calabar had just too much allround quality for their rivals and won their 23rd title while Jamaica College (JC) surprised Kingston College (KC) to take second spot. The top five: Calabar – 299, JC 258.5, KC 247.5, Wolmer’s Boys 121, St Jago 107. The green and black army, coached by Michael Clarke, showed admirable grit to muscle their way past pacesetters Jamaica College and Kingston College. Calabar’s assistant coach Omar Hawes was elated with the victory. “It’s a big […]

Several records went crashing on yesterday’s final day of the 103rd Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships as the defending champions Calabar and former champions Holmwood Technical marched to the top spots. Calabar, who were locked in a three-way battle at the start of the day, came out roaring – taking the lead when it counted and outlasting their main rivals, Kingston College (KC) and Jamaica College (JC). Holmwood trailed Edwin Allen for most of the day but pulled off an amazing victory as the girls from Clarendon lost points which they were expected to capture. Amid blaring horns and banging drums; oversized banners and a kaleidoscope of school colours, yesterday’s final day of ‘Champs 2013′ was already a spectacle long before the big crowds – avoiding intense sunshine – turned up in the late afternoon session.   Zaavan Richards signalled KC’s intentions from the outset, setting a new mark in the very first event of the day – the boys javelin open; with a 59.66m throw, which, like silver medallist Orlando Thomas’ 59.59m, bettered James McDonald’s 58.75m distance, posted in 2011. Richards’ schoolmate Nathaniel Bann was equally impressive in the Class Three Boys 400m, showing tremendous […]
