[hr] The Jamaican pre-World Championships training camp officially opened on Friday in Moscow, Russia, with just under 30 of the 44 athletes named on the team going through their paces under the watchful eyes of their coaches. Team Press Liaison Officer Dennis Gordon said that “27 athletes have arrived thus far and the entire contingent is expected to be here by Sunday”. Along with the local-based athletes including Olympic sprint hurdler Hansle Parchment, who left the island with members of the coaching staff on Wednesday, all three female sprint hurdlers Danielle Williams, Andrea Bliss and Shermaine Williams, Patricia Hall, as well as male intermediate hurdlers Leford Green and Isa Phillips were also present. The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) had named a 45-member team, but with the late withdrawal of 400m runner Akheem Gauntlett, only 44 will report to camp. The late withdrawal of the US-based Gauntlett has also prevented the JAAA from replacing him, as his withdrawal came after the July 29 deadline for entries to be submitted. Usain Bolt anchored a Jamaican relay team to victory Saturday at the London leg of the London Diamond League Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games in the Olympic Stadium, exactly a year after the start of the Summer Games in the British capital. The Racers Track Club finished the 4×100 race in 37.74 seconds, a day after Bolt’s victory in the individual sprint in the London stadium where he swept three gold medals last year. Bolt is warming up for the world championships in Moscow next month where he is looking to regain his 100-meter title. Saturday’s race could be the last time Bolt competes in Britain — unless the country changes its tax laws for overseas athletes. [hr] [hr] Dr. Herb Elliott, Chairman of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) has confirmed receiving reports of adverse analytical findings from ‘A’samples for five Jamaican athletes. “The process of the result management has commenced in accordance with the JADCO Anti-doping rules” Dr. Elliott told RJR Sports. “We cannot disclose any further information until the athletes have responded to notification of the ‘A’ sample” he added. Two Olympic medallists are among five Jamaicans who returned adverse analytical findings for banned performance enhancing drugs at the National Championships in June. According to highly placed track and field sources, four of the athletes are in the senior ranks, while the fifth is a junior. [hr] Having not been able to field the number of student-athletes desired to the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia, nor persons in other sporting disciplines besides track and field, the Jamaica Intercollegiate Sports Association is taking solace in the number of competitors that will feature in field events and the jumps. The team to the July 6-17 Games departed the island in two batches yesterday, with three of the eight members down to compete in the triple jump, shot put and discus. “This year is very significant because half of the team is field events persons,” Intercol executive and manager of the travelling team, Rashid Hall, “The opportunity is there for them to really showcase that Jamaica is not just track, but also about field.” Jamaica’s delegation was originally set to comprise 22 members, but was reduced to 10 due to financial constraints. His stablemate, Kemar Bailey-Cole, the next big thing from the Racers production line, was second in an impressive 9.98 with Nickel Ashmeade finishing third in 9.99. “For me, it’s all about qualifying. The trials is always to make the team, when it comes to championships is when it really matters,” were Bolt’s first words after his win. The biggest shock was perhaps Asafa Powell’s seventh-place finish in 10.22; not even good enough for a spot in the relay pool as it stands. “For me, Asafa has been through a lot this season, this is probably his third race he actually finished, so I’m surprised he actually came out here and finished a race, so for me, that’s good.
