[hr] The Jamaican pre-World Championships training camp officially opened on Friday in Moscow, Russia, with just under 30 of the 44 athletes named on the team going through their paces under the watchful eyes of their coaches. Team Press Liaison Officer Dennis Gordon said that “27 athletes have arrived thus far and the entire contingent is expected to be here by Sunday”. Along with the local-based athletes including Olympic sprint hurdler Hansle Parchment, who left the island with members of the coaching staff on Wednesday, all three female sprint hurdlers Danielle Williams, Andrea Bliss and Shermaine Williams, Patricia Hall, as well as male intermediate hurdlers Leford Green and Isa Phillips were also present. The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) had named a 45-member team, but with the late withdrawal of 400m runner Akheem Gauntlett, only 44 will report to camp. The late withdrawal of the US-based Gauntlett has also prevented the JAAA from replacing him, as his withdrawal came after the July 29 deadline for entries to be submitted. Usain Bolt anchored a Jamaican relay team to victory Saturday at the London leg of the London Diamond League Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games in the Olympic Stadium, exactly a year after the start of the Summer Games in the British capital. The Racers Track Club finished the 4×100 race in 37.74 seconds, a day after Bolt’s victory in the individual sprint in the London stadium where he swept three gold medals last year. Bolt is warming up for the world championships in Moscow next month where he is looking to regain his 100-meter title. Saturday’s race could be the last time Bolt competes in Britain — unless the country changes its tax laws for overseas athletes. Yona Knight-Wisdom came 23rd in the 1M springboard at the World Championships Yona Knight-Wisdom made history as he became the first Jamaican diver to compete at a World Championships when he appeared in the heats of the one-metre springboard in Barcelona. Born and bred in Leeds, Knight-Wisdom had a three-way choice of which country to represent – Jamaica from his father’s side, Barbados from his mother’s or Great Britain. He chose Jamaica and received his passport in January last year before becoming the first Jamaican male diver to compete internationally. Knight-Wisdom represented Jamaica for the first time in April 2012 in Germany, and on Saturday he came 23rd in the 1m springboard in only his fifth international competition. [hr] Jamaica will host Group Four of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-20 Women’s Tournament, starting from Tuesday. Bermuda, Cuba and Curacao will join the hosts in this group phase to be played at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex. The opening round of matches will begin on Tuesday, with Cuba facing Curacao followed by the second game when Bermuda go up against Jamaica. Jamaica will play Curacao Thursday while Bermuda will tackle Cuba. The final games will be played Saturday with Curacao encountering Bermuda and rivals Jamaica and Cuba face-off in the closing game of the tournament. Trinidad & Tobago and the Dominican Republic have secured the two spots available in Group One played in the Dominican Republic, which concluded with Trinidad and Tobago topping the group with six points, and Dominican Republic gaining three points to take second place. Both teams will advance to the finals set for October, in Puerto Rico. [hr] [hr] Dr. Herb Elliott, Chairman of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) has confirmed receiving reports of adverse analytical findings from ‘A’samples for five Jamaican athletes. “The process of the result management has commenced in accordance with the JADCO Anti-doping rules” Dr. Elliott told RJR Sports. “We cannot disclose any further information until the athletes have responded to notification of the ‘A’ sample” he added. Two Olympic medallists are among five Jamaicans who returned adverse analytical findings for banned performance enhancing drugs at the National Championships in June. According to highly placed track and field sources, four of the athletes are in the senior ranks, while the fifth is a junior. The team to the July 6-17 Games departed the island in two batches yesterday, with three of the eight members down to compete in the triple jump, shot put and discus. “This year is very significant because half of the team is field events persons,” Intercol executive and manager of the travelling team, Rashid Hall, “The opportunity is there for them to really showcase that Jamaica is not just track, but also about field.” Jamaica’s delegation was originally set to comprise 22 members, but was reduced to 10 due to financial constraints.
