VMBS Intercol Track and Field Championships 2013 Press Conference

The VMBS Intercol Track and Field Championships which will be held on April 5-6 at the UWI/Usain Bolt Track will be launched on Tuesday March 19th, 2013 at 11:00am in the Principal’s Council Room (above the Admissions office) at the University of the West Indies. The launch will be an opportunity to inform the public of the exciting event details and new developments as well as to kick start the ‘Journey to Kazan” Campaign.   “The championship is the largest event held by Intercol on the sporting calendar; it brings together most of the schools within the association competing in the sport of Track and Field over a period of two days. This meet features over 25 national representatives including Olympians and a number of the nation’s top rising stars in the sport including Rasheed Dwyer, Jordan Forte, Traves Smickle, Jenevive Russell, Carrie Russell, Jason Young and Hansle Parchment. Athletes such as Asafa Powell, Sherone Simpson, Shericka Williams, Rosemarie Whyte and a host of other Jamaican stars have competed at this meet over the years during their transition from high school to professional sport.” says Rashid C. AtKinson and other Olympians Dominate at Speedo Southern Sectionals on Day 2

Alia Atkinson, the fourth-place finisher in the Olympic final of the 100 breast, won that event today with a 1:08.64 representing South Florida Aquatics. The Jamaican has been faster this season with a 1:08.51 win at the Arena Grand Prix in Orlando. Two other Olympians were also in the top three: Sweden’s Rebecca Ejdervik, representing Hurricane, was second with a 1:09.95, and Canadian Martha McCabe was third with a 1:10.03.

Holmwood Technical stuns Edwin Allen for the win Champs 2013

In a sensational final day of the 2013 Inter-Secondary Sports Association (ISSA)/Grace-Kennedy Boys and Girls’ Cham-pionships, Holmwood Technical High came from well behind at the National Stadium yesterday to clip defending champions Edwin Allen High for the girls’ title, while Calabar High easily retained the boys’ crown. In a meet which saw 18 records falling on the final day and 30 overall, Holmwood wore down long-time leaders Edwin Allen, took the lead in mid-afternoon and came away with a narrow victory. The Maurice Wilson-coached Holmwood tallied 310.5 points to regain the title, their 10th in 11 years with Edwin Allen on 305.5. The top five was completed by St Jago (208), Vere Technical (202) and Hydel (157.50). On the boys’ side, Calabar had just too much allround quality for their rivals and won their 23rd title while Jamaica College (JC) surprised Kingston College (KC) to take second spot. The top five: Calabar – 299, JC 258.5, KC 247.5, Wolmer’s Boys 121, St Jago 107. The green and black army, coached by Michael Clarke, showed admirable grit to muscle their way past pacesetters Jamaica College and Kingston College. Edwin Allen were in commanding form on the second day of the 2013 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships, as they finished first and third in the three finals contested on Wednesday. The defending champions closed the day with 45 points to establish a 24 points advantage over nine-time champions Holmwood Technical High (21). The top five was rounded out by St Jago (16), Manchester High (eight) and St Andrew Technical High (five).   Tarasue Barnett got the Clarendon-based school off to the perfect start, as she successfully defended her Discus Class One title, breaking her own championship record as well as accounting for the national junior record in the process. The 18-year-old’s throw of 51.15m eclipsed her previous Champs record mark of 50.76m, which she had established last year and bettered Kellion Knibb’s previous national junior record mark of 51.02m, which was also set last year. Barnett’s team-mate, Tasha Crosse, claimed the bronze medal with her throw of 43.83m to earn their team 15 points from the first girl’s final.
